Oil Consumption
Just read an interesting technical service bulletin (TSB SI B11 0313) on acceptable levels of oil consumption on ALL BMW engines.
BMW does not consider a motor past the break-in period until it reaches 6,000 miles. Up to this point, "additional" oil consumption (whatever quantity that means) will not be considered from the owner by BMW. Over 6,000 miles, all engines are may consume up to: - all engines except Motorsport engines - up to 1 quart every 750 miles - all Motorsport engines - up to 2.5 quarts per 1000 miles All turbocharged engines and engine used in extreme conditions or high RPM range will consume more. What I found most interesting - 6,000 miles for break-in? Wow... Which reminds me - I haven't checked my oil lately.

Jeez... 2.5qts for every 1K miles is insane! This is basically BMW saying if your engine burns oil its not our problem because its "normal"

If I would have built a Porsche motor (non-track) and it would have used 2.5 qts in 1,000 miles, the owner would have bitched and returned it to me in a heartbeat. And I would have rebuilt that engine because I think 2.5 qts/1000 miles is excessive. A track motor is completely different - 2.5 qts per 50 laps at Road Atlanta is fine.

The V8 in our F10 is slurping a quart every 1000 miles, the F15 on the other foot hasn't come off the full mark once between any of the regular oil changes.

Those "acceptable" amounts seem excessive to me. I used to have a car with excessive blowby (plumes of blue smoke out the tailpipe on acceleration) that needed a motor refresh...even that car prior to rebuild was burning/using comparable amounts of oil as suggested to be OK by BMW. Funny.
Looks like it's time to check oil here, too. Let me go check the dipsticks on my BMW's to see where the levels are at...oh wait...we don't have those on the 35i or M3. That's a whole other topic. |

That really seems excessive. I've always burnt a quart every 5000 miles or so in all 6 of my BMWs.

Not sure what extreme conditions are, but 6000 miles from last oil change, driving 90-100 mph (hit 130 mph when felt conditions were right) on a 2000 mile road trip, I got an add 2 qt notice. I added one qt. Service due anyways (appointment on Wednesday). Not sure if since I only added 8 qt during last change (guide calls for 8.5-9 qt), if this could really be called oil consumption?

At 9,000 miles my oil level according to the idrive is full as well.
I did do an oil change at around 6,000 miles but at that time the oil level has been full as well. On my E70 and E60, I had different experiences where I needed to top off with a quart several thousand miles before I needed an oil change.
