Rusty hubs

The rust on my wheel hubs has been bugging me since I switched up to 21"s, much more noticeable now. Is this amount of rust normal? The silver paint is flaking off too. Anyone had this fixed under warranty?

If your service advisor has a pull at the dealership, he might get it painted for you free of charge.

If not just sand it down and re paint it. Does what did. They all rust for some reason.

Every Service Advisor I've spoke to about the hubs say the same thing, it's nothing to worry about. I also wanted to paint mine and when I brought it up, the SA said it'll start to flake off sooner rather than later so the time invested wouldn't be worth it. Well, I'm still debating on whether or not I want to paint mine, but the rusting isn't that bad at the moment.

My other option (and this is my thinking, not a suggestion to the OP), that I am highly considering is upgrading my brakes to the MPBK (and not just for aesthetics).

So tempting IMHO not saying anything about performance, but would look even better with slotted rotors

This is my 5th BMW. They've all had the rusty hubs and it's never really bothered me. Now that I think about it, the hubs have never been silver. I'm the second owner, maybe the wheel hubs were painted by the dealer at the previous owner's request? And now the paint is failing, it actually looks worse before because it's peeling. Can anyone confirm that this silver paint is not factory? If so that leaves me the options of wire brush it off and leave it, or wire brush it and repaint. ...OR M performance brakes.

No, just going to wait until I switch my wheels over for winter and take care of it then.

This is a seriously nasty environment for painted steel... it's essentially a high temp salt bath in winter... with UV attack present too.

IF you repaint, proper pretreatment on the substrate will be key.

Mechanical removal of the existing coating.
Alkaline cleaning to remove oils, soils, grease.
Acid deox to get to bare, active steel.
Zinc phosphate conversion coating.
Organic sealant.
Proper paint.

Or some variation of above...

This issue bugs the hell out of me; I pointed it out to my service advisor and he had them repainted for free. They started to re-rust within weeks...so annoying. Such nice wheels and then you see the RUST. If anyone has any luck with a proper DIY repaint, I would be interested in the fine details or some pics.

I did finally paint the hubs a recently. I used a wire brush on a drill to remove as much of the failing paint as possible, then cleaned with paint thinner and let dry. Painted with Dupli-Color silver caliper paint. So far so good, but it's only been about two months.

Car was at the dealer so I couldn't take pics until now. I just noticed that it looks like it's already starting to flake in the front a bit. Damn. Well, still a huge improvement, at least for now.

On my e70 I put Centric rotors on (makers of StopTech) the hats come black and held up for the last year I had it. No visible rust/flaking, I'm sure I'll put them in my f15 when the time comes.

On my 2015, in addition to the hubs, the rear dust plate and caliper covers are exhibiting significant rust also. It's such an eye sore that I stopped looking down at my wheels before getting into the car. It especially pisses me off every time I wash the car.

Spoke to two SAs at separate dealerships and they said it's totally normal. They won't replace or offer to do any cosmetic work on any of the components even though my car is under warranty. Strangely my F10 has hardly any similar issues though I've had it even longer than the X5.

Apparently it's a fairly common issue on all cars in the DC/MD/VA area because of our shitty, wildly variable weather.

Does anyone know how much approximately to do a full swap of parts on the standard brake kit? If it's remotely even close to half of the MPBK, I may be tempted. That full kit looks so good.
