X5M (F85) Dinan Software Woes...

New to the forum. Got my X5M in June 2016 and love it. Added the Dinan piggyback software in August 2016 and have had four drivetrain malfunction warnings over a three month (approx 2000 miles) period.

The first time, the code went away after I turned the car off for an hour and drove normally, but took to dealer and they cleared everything. The next three times, the code appears, the power is reduced and the car idles very rough.

Dealer (who supports Dinan and sold me the Dinan Module) states that the piggyback system has given an M6 owner and a few X5M owners problems similar to mine. I am losing confidence and may just work with my dealer to remove the software and get my money back (at least some of it)

Had dinan products on other Ms in the past and loved all of their stuff (e46 M3, e92 M3, e60 M5). I really enjoy my X5M and the software made my car come alive but I can't deal with the reliability issues. Anyone having similar issues or have some ideas for me?

I would like to install the Dinan module but want to keep the existing warranty as-is. Even though Dinan's warranty somehow replaces the manufacturer warranty, I just don't want to risk it.

Sorry you are having trouble!

wow man i cant believe it ... i had that issue on my 650 Gran coupe MSport... Prestige BMW had my car for 1 month doing testing cause of that issue.. at the end of it all .. BMW took $300.00 of my monthly payment ... and they refunded me for the dinan tune... now i have the DINAN stage 1 on my 2016 X6M and have had no issues ... you can feel the power difference... i also have a race exhaust ...

i was told it was the electronic wastegate on my 650 that was causing the issue

I'm hoping DINAN_ENGINEERING will chime in on the thread. It's been frustrating as I have heard that some X5Ms have run flawlessly and others have had issues. At my dealership (which supports Dinan) they have two X5Ms and an M6 that throw the same fault code (

What is the code that the cars are throwing?

I would have reached out to steve dinan directly. theres a lot of engineering that goes into these and i don't think problems are the norm.

Steve Dinan does not own Dinan anymore, he sold the company. He can reach out to either R&D at Dinan or just Dinan it self.

You can PM me but who's the dealer? What is the fault code(s)? I have no recent records of any M6's or X5M's in the Chicago area with any issues through tech support/warranty. Last one was July for an M6. Its entirely possible the dealer is playing cowboy like some like to do and are self diagnosing without actually consulting us.

If you could also send me the last 7 of the VIN that would be helpful.

Thank you for being active on here. It is actually nice to have someone that we can bounce problems with. I'm about to have mine done with the stage 1, exhaust and Dinantronics. Question, I have the stage 1, if I want to add the stage 2 air intake, do I need to get another software update? Or would the one that I have can handle the add on?

Thank you.

Eric

You would not have to update from stage 1 with the intake installed if you did not want to. Just wouldn't be getting a little extra bump of power on top is all. If you wanted to upgrade to the stage 2 tune at a later date though it would need to be brought in to a dealer to update the mapping. Same hardware though. Cost would just be the difference in price between stages.

I have had it since it was available so about a year and no issues whatsoever. My X5M with the dinantronics is running flawlessly, even with upgraded filters and Akrapovic exhaust. Not sure your dealer is being honest. Also did the unit get submerged or a faulty harness?

Thanks for all the posts and feedback. I'm awaiting the fault codes and just haven't been back in touch yet with the dealer. Will post when I have more info.

So after a lot of issues with the tune, I have decided to remove it from my X5M. Per the thread, I had stage I and got codes which dealer could not resolve. Took a gamble and went to stage II and added CF airbox. Codes again. Dealer is working with Dinan but I got fed up and took the tune off.

Each time it seems to have been code 7075, fault codes 101D08, 100B04, and 107A51... per the service advisor

I know that folks are using the module and enjoying it. I have now had two and they don't work for me so going back to stock.

I heard pretty much the same exact story about the dinan software on another's x5m at the dealership where I sold my car back. Mine did not have the software.

Went to the US site and didn?t find info for the F85/F86. I might be interested after I take delivery in Jan ?18 of my F85. Glad I didn?t go with Dinan for my F83, what turned me off was Steve Dinan selling to private equity.

They are 2 US website, one is the US Distributor while the other is not.
But even that, when I met RaceChip Germany at SEMA last year, they said that there is no official US Authorized Distributor.
Just check on their Germany website, it is the most updated one.
