Passenger side front fusebox location
Does anyone know where the front passenger side fusebox is hidden on the F15? I have the RHD version but that shouldn't matter, it is tucked into the passenger side somewhere regardless of version.
I've looked at the paperwork tucked into the rear fusebox and I've undone the clips on the trim piece under the glovebox but can't see anything, not even a mass of wiring heading to a fusebox. I want to hardwire a dashcam and have the 12v to 5v USB stepdown transformer & piggyback fuses but can't find the fusebox to wire it into. Any pictures would be very appreciated too. |

It's on the exterior side of the passenger footwell buried under carpet.

Aaah, so it's not easily accessible then and not where they tell you it is in the manual, very helpful BMW. I'll have a dig when I have some time later. I only need a 12v feed for a dashcam, shouldn't be this difficult. |

Okay so I have found the fusebox in the passenger footwell, well hidden under the carpet.
Looking at the fuses, which side will be the common +12v bus and which side will be the load. I'm using a piggy back fuse so need to make sure it is the right way around to pick up the common 12v bus and run both loads in parallel instead of running the extra load, small though it may be, in series with the original load and possibly overloading the original fuse. Or is my thinking way off here? |

Unless it is obvious by looking at it - i.e. a common buss on one side of the fuse and a single wire on the other side then the only way is to pull the fuse and see which side the 12V appears on. I would normally run it in parallel as you suggest with the new fuse connected to the 12V buss side. This assumes that the new fuse is a much lower value than the old fuse that you are running parallel to.

Sorry that I can't offer any advice but I am planning to install a dashcam as soon as the long-awaited X5 arrives and it would be much appreciated if you could post more details and photos about your experience of hardwiring (fusebox, best route for wiring, etc.). Would also be interesting to know more about the dashcam model you chose and components (I was about to order the Transcend DrivePro 200 on Amazon). Best of luck with the installation and thanks in advance!

Dear All, I am hunting for more information about hardwiring dashcam installations . I understand that I will need a 12V to 5V transformer and two piggy back fuses and that you can use the fusebox in the passenger footwell or in the boot. So far, so good but I am still wondering about the following:
1. I read somewhere that most modern BMWs shut down all power to the fuse box after being parked for a while so the dashcams will not protect you while the vehicle is parked. Is this the case for the F15? 2. I am tempted by the Blackvue 650 2-channel model which is pricey but seems to get good reviews. Can this be wired to the front or back fusebox - does the power cable reach far enough? I am asking since using the back fusebox looks a little easier. 3. I came across the "BMW Advanced Car Eye system" which is an own brand Dashcam - it looks a bit like my old compact camera but says it is ready for permanent installation (and perhaps the dealer can do it). Any experience with this one? http://www.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/topics/ow...tailFooterNote |

I used a mini piggyback fuse to hook into one of the fuses there and used a 12v to dual 5v 2A USB adapter from Amazon which works great. Only thing so far is that if the dashcam if left connected and recording and the car goes undriven for 2 days it gets a little upset as it has noticed that the battery is discharging (more than expected?) whilst parked and throws up an error until you next stop and start it. To get from below the rear view mirror under the trim around the perimeter of the windscreen and down behind the A pillar trim and door rubbers to the footwell fusebox requires at least a 2m cable though it is pretty tight and 3m makes more sense. |

My Blackvue came with a long enough power cable that it made it all the way to the rear fuse box, which is extremely easy to access and work with. Cable is stuffed under various rubber strips at the edge of interior panels and trim and is totally out of sight all the way back. It was easy, nothing had to be removed. If your power cable is long enough, that's what I would recommend. And if it's not, I would recommend it anyway, just get a longer wire if needed. I also used the black box to power it. Plenty of room back there next to the fuse box for everything.

Many thanks NPickles and MysticBlue for your really helpful advice I will go ahead and order the Blackvue and use the rear fuse box. Will need to see about putting a switch somewhere to disconnect it when parked for more than a few days and avoid draining the battery. Have been trying to find out more about the BMW "Intelligent Eye" dashcam but it looks to be inferior to the Blackvue and not discreet enough for my liking.

Hey guys, so I'm thinking about buying a BlackVue. I saw this review and thought it was awesome. Which one do you recommend I buy? I want to have both front and rear camera setup. Do I need anything besides the kit itself? @hyde mentioned that it requires Power Magic Kit? What is that exactly? Any info/advice is very much appreciated. I need something like this in Chicago especially after my major mods that are being completed this week.

I think we need a dashcam thread. Power magic is pro is not a requirement, it is recommended to avoid discharging your battery because vue turns on and keeps drawing power if you wire it to your always on fuse. I am not familiar with it if it has a big battery to keep recording but I don't think it can continue recording if you just plug it to your cig lighter. So power magic helps you guarantee that you will have constant power in case someone hits etc. Like I said I am not familiar how exactly it works. I'll check your video. I just need to know how to wire my camera directly to a switched power source in fuse box without shorting anything, otherwise I think I was able to run my super long cable pretty good without making it really ugly, I wend under the door seal and around the visor and behind the rearview, but in the past interior was black so it blended well, now it's white so it is noticable, while still pretty hidden.

And to be honest, I wouldn't want to mount a screen that big and fancy, and leave it in a parked vehicle anywhere, if someone hits you and they don't want to be caught, they'll just break your glass and take your camera. Make the dashcam as obscure as possible, put it right behind the rearview and make sure it doesn't have any chrome or flashy trim, if needed I would even recommend getting a faded tint strip on your windshield and installing it right behind it pointing down if you are worried about your trip and keeping your vehicle parked for a while. If you don't need it when parked, go all the way then get this huge thing. I mentioned, mine is Abee 55 or something, got it directly from Taiwan and it works great, it is small and has great picture & functionality, only problem I messed up its battery now it won't hold charge...

Yeah, man. I don't get people at all. So messed up! This is the world we live in...and it's only going to get worse as time goes on (that's sad considering I'm a very optimistic person, lol).

@opasha, I am using the Blackvue DW650 (I think it is correct model number).
I didn't install the Powermagic thing though. My track video was using that Blackvue camera. I just finished cleaning up the install few days ago and the rear camera is also attached already.

What's the best way to install with the best settings assuming I also want a dual camera setup like yours?

Blackvue 650 front camera is mounted directly below the mirror housing. Both the power cable and the video cable run together up the side of the mirror housing, then are stuffed under the roof liner over to the passenger side A pillar, stuffed under the A pillar air bag trim piece over to the top of the door where there is a rubber trim piece that is really easy to stuff them under. Stuffed under the top of the trim piece on the B pillar, then the same rubber piece over the top of the rear door. Here, they separate. The video cable continues along the top to the rear hatch rubber trim, where it is simalarily stuffed, then wrapped once around the rubber boot that the factory wires run through and wrapped with a couple of wire tires, then along the trim to the rear camera wich is mounted center top of the window. The power cable is stuffed around the rear seat leather trim pieces and down to the fuse box area. I used fuse number 121 for switched accessory and fuse 162 for continuous battery power. There is also a ground plate just forward of the fuse panel. It's pretty obvious... has a bunch of brown wires going to it. I used the magic power box or whatever it's called, which has a female cigarette type power output and the power cable of the 650 has a male, so that was easy. If you are not using the magic power box, you will have to cut that part off and splice the wires into a couple of spades in order to insert the positive into the fuse slot of your choice, or buy a cheap female extension at your local auto parts store.
