Oh S#*T . . . Caught a curb
Clearly I'm not worthy driving an X5
Yesterday, pulling out of my street onto the main road I clipped the curb. I thought it was just the rubber as it was an ever so slight little bump. I tapped it down with a hammer and filed it a little smoother. Leaving it this way is unacceptable to me. Where do I go from here? I've seen gators here installed by a poster, but they are ugly IMO and make the wheel look smaller. On my Saabs I owned years ago I had to send out the rims for repair on two occasions as they were historic for leaking or going out of round. Each time they came back they were of a slightly different shade then the silver metallic of the ones that were still on the car. I also have run flat tires, so it's not like I can toss the spare on and send this damaged wheel out if I can find a place that will do a repair and an exact paint match. Any ideas short of replacing the wheel? |

Well this is not a biggie. Just google mobile ( or not) rim repair specialist in your area. Last time i had something similar i had a guy coming to me with all equipment. Couple of hours and $200 later my rim was as good as new, and balanced.

That's not too bad of a "scratch." I understand you want everything to be as perfect as acceptably possible, but that's pretty minor. Looks like you did a pretty good job with your repair job IMO. Like artem123 posted, there may be a mobile wheel repair service in your area that may fix your predicament.

artem123 has about the best recommendation short of replacing the wheel.

I curbed one of my 469Ms a couple of weeks back and I did basically the same as you and filed it. I did mix some epoxy with silver paint and filled it. I had decided to buy a new wheel until I found out that it would cost £800 excluding fitting and balance. I have calmed down since then and have decided to leave it for a while. Your wheel really doesn't look bad - but I do feel your pain!

I went ahead and bought the "wheel and tire" insurance when we bought our X5 (yes, a sucker born each day). First return visit for wheel work; 3 wheels with various amounts of rash, taken care of. They gave me a receipt showing the "cost" of the repairs (I think it was around $300 or so) - service guy said they do that so people can keep track of repairs and decide if the insurance is worth it. My OCD (at least on the X5) remains intact.
when I bought my CPO 535, no wheel insurance; I'll take my chances

Don't see any mobile rim repair outfits near Albany NY. I'll check with my BMW dealer and see if they know of someone.
What metal is the 2016 stock F15 X5's made of. Are they painted alloy? I'd rather have it professionally done so as to cause me "the pain" of coughing up the dollars to fix my stupid error. My Wife' Audi has a few spots on her wheels too, so I'll get hers done also. Coincidently, I'm dropping my Daughter"s Highlander off tomorrow at Tint World for LED low beam bulbs to be installed. They are listed when I google rim repair so I'll see who they use. They probably just send them out to the same schlock shop I used to send my Saab wheels to who can't get a color match correct. But check out this youtube DIY rim repair link below I found (click on the pic). This guy is great. One of the best DIY vids I've seen. Great spray prep and spray painting tips. (I don't know who he is, no connection to me). But like I said I know I could repair it myself, but I need to feel the pain. $200 is the loss of many glasses of Chardonnay to me and that's feeling the pain This will make me think twice the next time I get too near a curb. |

Same thing happened to my M4 and my wife's X5, slight touch and the rim is badly damaged it's like they're made out of plastic. Got them all repaired, each one costs us $150 USD but they look brand new again

One good feature that the X5 has is the passenger mirror flips down when in reverse so you can see and judge how close you are to the curb.
I live on a street that has a main street in the middle and two carriage lanes on each side. Instead of leaving the carriage lane like a normal driver would I was in a rush and shot out at an angle I'm the type of owner that would never even think of parking my X5 near another car in a parking lot . . . so this wheel imperfection is going to somehow be repaired. |

Let me suggest quite a different viewpoint for this "rim" event.
Before it happened, you owned a factory perfect X5, impersonal like all others. Now you have YOUR X5, functionally as good as before but with your small "personal sign of ownership" that nobody but you will ever notice - and if you ever see anybody looking intensely at your rims, well, you may wisely consider keeping him or her a bit farther... Finally, now you saved some repair $$$ that you may wish to invest in some good Chardonnay and have a toast to "Thankfully, life is not perfect and MY X5 is so special that it just offered me a splendid moment!" |

Checked with my BMW dealership. The said they send it out and its back the same day. $200.
My concern is for a one day turnaround I'm not going to get my original wheel back. Who knows how badly damaged the one they fixed was and then they fixed it and now I'm getting that one back! I might try some of that metal bondo, a little matching color spray and then some clear coat spray. Since I have to do my Wife's Audi too this could save me $400. I'll do it on the car and just mask it off. From that vid I linked too it looks pretty easy. |

He said it takes two days and you get your same wheel back. Ya, I'll get over it when I don't see anymore damage on my rim I buy my cars outright and try to keep them in perfect condition. Which gets me the highest private resale possible. For a $65k MSRP BMW I can spring for $200, if I don't like the repair I attempt myself. |
