I seek a different overall ownership experience with a premium brand - look at what happened with VW Phaeton. So in my mind it's a lot more than just comparing numbers and interior quality. Frankly, I am surprised to even hear this argument.
The reality is at the $100K price point, you can afford to cross shop quite a bit and have lots of options. And you can afford to spend more than $100K too.

I bought my X5M after almost getting a new JGC diesel (also drove the JGC SRT but it was a dog at altitude). When Jeep wouldn't give me the trade/deal I wanted (takata airbag recall was killing my E70 value), I walked and kept shopping. I have other fast cars so it is nice to have a super fast daily like the X5M, but I could put a cheaper SUV and cheaper performance car in my garage for about the same cost.

I chose to buy the X5M, but I shopped a lot of things. I'm very happy with the choice I made.

My question regarding the Alfa product is... how much of it actually Alfa? If the Ferrari is a stand alone product and their bits trickle down to Maserati... Maserati shares some bits with jeep/chx... what does AR wind up with? is it mostly jeep/chx bits with an AR badge? The Stelvio Quadrifoglio on paper is an awesome competitor to a Macan, F-Pace or an SQ5... but what is it really? outside of the ccb kit and the h/k audio what is under there?

Dunno the parts makeup, but if it drives at all like the Giulia yet has a more utility oriented package, should I care? The Alfa Guilia and Stelvio use the ZF 8 speed auto box, which incidentally also come in the Jeep and our beloved BMW X5M (along with the Range Rovers and many other vehicles). Porsche/Audi/VW/Lambo/?? shares many parts across their collective brands. Does that make Audi or Porsche less desireable?

And Alfas claimed performance for the Stelvio is right up there with the X5M too, which can't be said about the Macan, F-Pace, or SQ5. To me that's key.

As of recent years parts in the VAG family trickle down the line instead of everyone sharing the same parts bin as in the past. It annoyed the hell out of me when I would get into an R8 and see an MFD from an A3/Golf. You get into a Bentley GTC and there are bits from Touareg and Porsche all over it. So to me yes, it does bother me in the same vein I would not buy a Trackhawk at their price but at least you know what you're getting when you get in. Again I dont know what is inside the AR product but I would love to see how much of it is Jeep if anything at all.

Garage List
2020 AMG E63 S  [0.00]
2020 Jeep Wrangler  [0.00]
2017 X6 M  [0.00]
I'm probably in the absolute minority here... but I don't think I would get another X5M or X6M.

While I love the car on many levels - I don't think it's worth what I'm paying a month. Add on top of that all the annoyances (squeaky breaks, wheel bearing clicking, rattling dashboard, poor A/C) it really makes it a tough one.

I had a Challenger Hellcat for the last few days while my car is being shipped back to me from NYC and I see myself enjoying that car so much more. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges but at the end of the day its about the excitement and experience.

While I would probably never buy an American car (maybe a GT350R but not as a daily) I might look into something like a C63S.

I'm looking forward to the 2019 X5M ~200lbs lighter and 33 more hp from the bigger turbos. Add a RaceChip and let it rip. A low 11 second ride in the rain.

This review is what sold me on the M (even quicker than the M3):

Range Rover Sport SVR: 1:38.78, AMG GLE Coupe S: 1:36.00, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S: 1:34.32, BMW M3: 1:32.51, BMW X6 M: 1:32.46.

Have you looked at the new 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR? I think the updates for 2018 have just posted to the Land Rover USA website about 1-2 weeks ago. This car does not compete with the X5 M on the track, as OnfireX5 quoted Motor Trend below:

Range Rover Sport SVR: 1:38.78, AMG GLE Coupe S: 1:36.00, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S: 1:34.32, BMW M3: 1:32.51, BMW X6 M: 1:32.46.

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/bmw/x...yenne-turbo-s/

Although that 2015 article mentions, (also the reason I bought the 2018 X5 M) LRRRSSVR is 6 seconds slower than the X5 M / X6 M, the 2018 version has had some tweaking. There is now an additional 25 horsepower, and there is all new technology in the interior that is trickling down from their new Velar release. It has a mostly touchscreen interface now for all center console multimedia and climate controls, and has a nice electronic instrument display that you still cannot get on this last year 2018 X5 M.

It has some amazing paint color choices. Hope BMW NA is listening to that portion. Too few choices. The 2018 SVR also has a couple of different exterior carbon fiber packages from the factory.

Outside of a heavy Mercedes-AMG SUV that is not as track focused, the SVR has what is frequently described as the best exhaust note of any performance SUV.

In the above December 2015 Motor Trend comparison, the writers gave the SVR second place, even over the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. I would buy the Porsche is there was any real value, but you have to go Turbo S just to match the performance of the X5 M, and the base price is literally $60,000.00 more than the BMW.

If I bought another performance SUV, it would be the 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR. That is such a long name though. Imagine telling the DMV at registration. Or your insurance company.

out of curiosity, i would like to know what you are passing your "pass" comment on... i see you said two colleagues had their RR "lemon'd" but i would like to know which models they have and what the issue(s) are. secondly i have to guess that they're going through "monroeville" based on your location... is that so?

Have to agree...I have owned four (3 Range Rovers - 1 RR Sport) over the years and the last two were the worst. Nothing that left me stranded but numerous service visits to resolve issues...some were never resolved. After a recent visit to one of the RR forums I would say nothing has changed since my last one 4-5 years ago.

My RR Vogue TDV8 was a catastrophy.
I've kept it only 7 months ...

I recently tried out the RR Sport SVR.
The sound is absolutely amazing , but that's it.
While the 2 days I drove it , the multimedia was deciding when I was allowed ti listen to my iPod , the GPS looks like the one you can find in a 1999 Honda Accord

I forgot to say that the ride is harsh ...
Terribly uncomfortable , it has pneumatic suspension though

RS7 is a great car and is definitely a good option. Very impressive characteristics!!
S63 - too big, always thought of S-Class as a chauffeur driven car
GL63 - 7 passenger car is too big for me at this point in life
M5 - is much smaller than 7 series (760 or Alpina did an amazing job).
I?m toying with an S7 vs X5M right now. If an M5 is too small for you, the A7 platform isn?t really any bigger save for the boot lid being a hatch but that boot is narrow af. Test drove a Macan GTS and liked it, but for the price, would rather just go for the X5M CPO. Have you sat in an A/S7 yet?
