Steering Column Replaced 2016 X5
1.5 years and 14,000 miles my steering column was replaced because the telescopic wheel quit working on my 2016 X5.
The steering wheel has always been perfectly centered up until getting the car back from the dealer. It's now like 6:30 and 12:30 dipping on left side. The dealer tried telling me there's only one way to put the steering wheel back on. So why is it off center with the new column? There has to be adjustment either to the column or somewhere under the car. This is not acceptable to me and I will keep the forum updated. |

Yep. Something is not right. Stay on them about repairing the column correctly. Steering column replacement has become more popular lately. I noticed your involvement on the other thread, will watch to see how this works out for both of you.

A little update for you...
My steering wheel tilting to the right has now been fixed. It was done by a BMW Engineer that visits dealerships once a month, but I'm sure you can request them. The fix was done only through programming and it supposedly took less than 30 minutes. He also made the steering heavier, so it feels much better now. |

Intrigued about how he made the steering heavier. Any idea what that’s all about? Mine is a bit light for my taste. My steering column is likely on its way out as it just started making an awful whine when tilting up and down for entry/exit.

I was really not a fan of the light steering as well. |

I'm assuming the engineer did it in order to stop me from complaining about how I have to keep making small adjustments to steering to keep the car going straight. It did solve the problem though |

Today my steering column stopped working. I can adjust it up and down, but cannot pull it out. Very annoying to have to drive barely reaching the steering wheel. Car is 6 month old, 14 000 km. Will have to take it to the dealer but as far as i can tell, nobody figured out what causes this problem. I adjusted the steering wheel height just last week (brought it quite low) so i was wondering if anyone else was driving with a very low adjusted steering wheel when it happened. Also, does anyone know how to turn off that "self adjusting" of the steering column, each time you leave the vehicle?

Now that the column has been replaced there seems to be more play than before.
Seemed more precise before. Anyone else whose had their column replaced feel a difference? |
