No jack pads normal when OEM runflats are installed?

I took delivery of a 2016 X5 xDrive35d (F15) back in February and just noticed for the first time that I do not have the 4 jack pads installed on the underside of my vehicle. BMW calls these the "support lifting platform".

The parts look like this:

Link to the missing part:

https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-2...uine-bmw-part/

Most people will use a little adapter on their jack to avoid mangling the jack pad:

Questions from the experts (before I ask my dealer):

(1) My vehicle came with OEM runflat tires so no spare tire or jack (yay). Is it therefore normal for these jack pads to also be missing? This would surprise me, but not really. I'm concerned that without the jack pads in place that snow and salt may get into the 3 holes where normally the jack pads are snapped in causing rust over time from the inside out. I tend to keep my vehicles a long time (10-15 years).

(2) If it's normal to not have them on runflat setups, what do you guys use when jacking the vehicle if you don't have jack pads? I used a chunk of wood on the lift but it's a bit of a pain to placing it right. I'd prefer to have the jack pads however and then use (or make) and adapter like in the pic above. But if there's a better idea like something that snaps in and is completely flat that would be great (no adapter required).

The 2016 X5 was purchased in Canada if that makes a difference.

Cheers!

Kal

My 2014 X5 35d has them, and it came with runflats and no spare or jack. Does anyone know if these are installed at the factory or are they part of dealer prep?

Those should be installed during vehicle prep by dealership.
I have seen a few customers that had those parts sitting pretty in the trunk since the dealership didn't do a proper preparation.

Mine were in the trunk. Hope yours are too. If not, call our dealer and they should send you a set free of charge.

Just had a look under my X5 & the the jack pads are there.

One question though, I only have them at the rear, should I have them at the front too ??

I just bought a 2014 x5, where is the front jacking point? I was trying to take all four wheels off at the same time and didn't see a front jack spot.

Mine were sitting under the passenger seat. I just popped them right in place. Takes 2 minutes to do all 4. If you don't have them then go by the dealer and pick some up.

That's what I figured. I'll give them a call. They're very new and I believe it's one of the first X5's they've sold.

I checked in the trunk/spare tire area as well as inside the two removeable side storage compartments and under all seats, just to be sure (I've been in them before) and they're nowhere to be found.

Thread drift a bit here, but speaking of dealer prep, does anyone have a complete list of what is normally be done for an X5 xDrive35d? Curious what else they missed.

Here's something generic from the BMW TIS (Technical Information-System) documentation (for the early E53 model I believe but the idea's the same on the F15):

P.S Sorry for the late response here guys ... nothing worse than someone asking questions on a forum and then disappearing. EDIT: I confirmed I have instant email notification turned on but must have missed the first email response ...

The pads are installed at port and if missed at port it should be done during the PDI process at the dealership. If you did not have these installed they are buried somewhere inside the vehicle or the dealer has them set aside and glossed over this important part of the PDI process.

Is it normal to get a filled out PDI checklist from the dealer as was done here?: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...57&postcount=8

I just went through all the paperwork the dealer provided at the time of sale, and there's no PDI checklist included, so I'm curious if there's anything critical they missed...

that is supposed to be included with your books or purchase order and paperwork however depending on the dealership those checklists mean very little. some unscrupulous techs or pdi employess simply check all boxes then remove all the protective plastic and go on to the next.

Mine fell out when I jacked it up....so even if they were installed they could've disappeared.

Yeah they're easy to remove and replace, but they're kind of pricey for a piece of plastic that's easily damaged with use.

I seriously recommend you guys get one of those jackpad adapters. I got one on Amazon for $20 that's made of aluminium, fits perfectly in the rectangle piece and gives you a nice flat surface to work with especially if you use floor jacks.

I've heard that they do tend to fall out. I was just surprised that after 9-10 months all 4 of mine were missing so I suspect they were never installed.

Yes - they just push/snap in. You can pry out old ones with a flathead screwdriver I would imagine.

You can buy 'official' replacements too. For example:

You can make your own too out of hockey pucks if you're somewhat DIY (I'm Canadian so we have buckets of these things all over the house ... of course).

A video showing you how:

I got a set of four on amazon as well for around $13. I concur, they are a must have item.

I use foam blocks on mine to prevent damage. They crush too easy without proper adapters, etc...
