Steering column replacement at 7000 miles

Went to get into my wife's car yesterday morning and found the steering wheel to be stuck in the up entrance/exit position. The steering was unaffected but the overall driving position was extremely uncomfortable. When I tried to adjust the column with the electric control I just heard a click. I brought the car into my dealership this morning and got a call around lunch time that the entire steering column needs to be replaced. With the holidays the earliest I'll get the car back is next Friday. This is my six BMW and my 4th in the last 4 years. I had a 550 xdrive buy back in 2014 at 3000 miles and now this. I recently retired a Audi b8 s4 with nearly 80000 miles that was flawless for my entire ownership. I currently also have a Jeep and a Porsche 911, both with just over 10000 miles. Both have been perfect. Is it just me or is bmw making subpar cars compared to the rest of the market! Does anyone else feel that the quality is just not there anymore!!! I'll probably regret what I'm saying but just really need to vent right now. Thanks for listening

Steering wheel being stuck seems very common. I had the problem twice with the F15 and once with the E70. Never had any issues with the E60 cars. Maybe the Germans can do it better than the Americans. :

I've got you beat. Had mine replaced at less than 3 months of ownership and 4000 miles. Same issue.

Several threads on here regarding this issue.

Come on fellas. It's a car. They break. I can give you similar stories for every single brand out there.

Very true. Horror stories exist across all brands. I've had many issues with my '14, but the dealer support and service is honestly what keeps me in it (and its a joy to drive of course). Just comes down to your preference and how much you can tolerate for repair frequency. Just my .02.

Agree. I believe in warranties and good repair service at the dealership. I'm covered on both sides, and it's honestly why I'm weary of switching brands. The service I get at BMW is night and day what I used to get at Ford or Dodge. I hear Lexus here is VERY good as well.

You can always find something better once have a problem.

A vehicle with no features has nothing to go wrong, so sure
can say its does not experience the problem.

I had the same issue and the steering column was replaced in a day under warranty. Out side of this one issue the X5 has been flawless.

Just received the faulty Passenger Restraint System error message... about a week after my steering wheel will no longer telescope in.
