EGR
2015 35-d w/40,000 miles on ExxonMobil diesel, required maintenance and every 5,000 miles oil changes. Very dirty oil filter each change, but no problems with EGR. I do drive 175 miles each day at 75mph for my work commute

You don't need a new EGR...you need a new house!

F15 n57n engine has 2 exhaust coolers, 1 on the intake and another right after the manifold. For the ones that had the exhaust cooler replaced, which one did BMW replace?
Did BMW do bunch of tests, clean the sot before determining the cooler needs replacing? This is my 3rd time in the shop with CEL in 2 weeks. 1st time, egr sensor replaced, 2nd time solenoid was 'cleaned'... really... now waiting on what BMW will do next... Apparently the shop is following procedures. Thanks for your help! |

For DPF cleaning or regeneration : run at 2-3000 rpm for 20-25 mins. These cars have passive regeneration or active if the ECU deems necessary due to higher exhaust back pressure. A proper freeway run in a lower gear usually works well done once a week. This will also make the EGR last longer.
While regenerating you will notice a drop in fuel mileage and burnt smells after stopping. Hope this helps. |

101K on the odometer of my 35d. Since the original EGR issue I noted earlier, no problems to date. I drive mine "passionately" we'll say, with a good mix of city and highway. Short trips with little time operating at full temp could be contributing to some of your issues.

I agree. The stop/go feature probably does not help either on a diesel.
Update...X5 is still in the shop from the 3rd CEL in 2 weeks. Dealer is removing the exhaust cooler for inspection and has not made a determination to replace it. Last edited by bim_power; 04-20-2017 at 01:30 AM.. |

EGR Nightmare
I have a F15 X5D bought with CPO warranty. Prior to the CPO, the selling dealer had replaced the EGR Cooler and other parts. Since then I have had 3 CELs related to some EGR issue or another and the vehicle has been in the shop over 15 days. Once some sensor was replaced and second time the EGR cooler was replaced. Now, the CEL is on again with the vehicle in the shop with another EGR issue. May need one more EGR cooler. What a nightmare in less than a year of ownership! Do you all have any suggested course of action to take with the SA? I have to say that the dealership I am working with is courteous and helpful. Also, will the EGR components be covered by the CPO warranty? I have the original warranty for about another year yet, and 2 years of CPO after that.

common issue with the M57 motors. My E70 still hasn't clogged yet. It comes down to driving longer distances to allow a proper DFP regen once a week. IIRC on the M57, BMW SIB has a prescribed minimum speed and time to drive to get the regen. I want to say you need to do at least 45 mph for 20 miles.

I drive a lot of miles at 80k now after 22months... I am not planing on spending 10k every 2 years on repairs... especially where in Texas Diesel are Emission testing exempt.... I'm really trying to find a solution even if that's not optimal and means extra work... |

Our check engine light came on today. It’s a model year 2015 X5 d with 51,800 miles. My app tells me it’s the egr cooling that’s bad. Normally my wife does a lot of highway driving but not so much in the last few months. Luckily we got the extended warranty so I’m ok. I Carly for bmw let’s you run the dpf regen by the push of a button. It might be a good idea to do it more often, but I’ll wait and hear what the dealer says causes this problem

I’m at 39600 miles and a CEL that the dealer says is a NOX sensor. We’ll see what else happens.

My 2014 X5 35d has almost 77k and I have not experienced any of these problems.
I do practice not using the auto Start/Stop and I tend to leave the engine running and lock doors if I get out to make a quick purchases. This has been working for me |
