Racechip

Do you need to upgrade your spark pugs if putting a racechip on 50i?

Not required, and most of us did not. But, it’s not a bad idea.

You have three options stock Bosch for 50i, x5m stock Bosch plugs , or NGK 97506.
I would personally go with the Ngk’s , I was going to go with those as I was getting drivetrain malfunction, but dealer replaced all my plugs and coils for me free of charge . They used the factory Bosch which are fine, I had 56k miles when they were changed.

If your changing plugs anyway, then go one stage colder. Either X5M plugs or something similar.

Definitely go colder steps like the X5M or NGK ones gapped to ".6mm". Even if you weren't doing a tune, they are better anyways.

I also recently installed a Racechip Ultimate for my 50i not 5.0 @ 45.5K miles. Got some random misfires and replaced spark plugs. Then misfire on cylinder 6 and turns out to be the coil packs. Replaced those and now I'm golden.

If you are changing the plugs do the coils packs as well. Get the Bosch ones from Rock-Auto for like 20 bucks each. Same for the spark plugs too.

-Editted to clarify .6 millimeters vs inches.

Replacing plugs is a great addition, especially with the mileage that you have.
The X5M plug, gapped at 0.020"-0.022" is what needed.

I didn’t when I got my car, but had WOT problems with the sparks after they were replaced by the dealer so I don’t think they were gapped correctly. I got the NGK Iridiums with smaller gapping seems to solved WOT problems for me.

Yes do it. I lasted less than 7k miles on oem plugs before WOT issues. New M plugs and 25k miles later without an issue.

Get the M if they're cheaper. Otherwise NGK are the best option. When I wrote the DIY the Ms were running $4 a piece for some reason. Now they're like quadruple that I think. Been awhile since I looked them up though.

Do the Ms (or NGKs) whichever make sense financially when you change them. As mentioned already do the coil packs then too or just do plugs, coil packs and RC all at the same time.. start it up and enjoy.

Thanks everyone. I'm just not sure how to gap the other plugs and I'm having my plugs changed by VAC motor sports in Philadelphia. Apparently the tech there doesn't like people bringing in their own plugs because people have brought shitty ones in and they didn't work.

That’s fine let him supply the parts but tell him to match the best price you can get, I’m sure he can get them obviously cheaper then you can.
