50/50 city/highway driving. iDrive says the 50i is getting 14.x mpg, whereas the 35d is getting 28.x mpg.

I get to work at about the same time with either vehicle.
Wow that's almost 1000km for your 35D. I may have to seriously look into that next time I'm in the market again. Unless I win the lottery before that lol

Yes, I am extremely happy with the economy of the 35D! Would highly recommend it to anyone. Not to mention, the driving dynamics with the copious amounts of low end torque is very good for around town.

I mainly drive around town so that extra mileage would be great.
May even be worth looking into trading mine in sooner rather than later. See if any good deals pop up around me

After my wife used the X5d exclusively for highway commuting on a tank when I filled it the range was 698 miles it 1123 km and I was shocked. Our E70 wasnt used as much on the highway, but now its mostly highway miles. Lifetime average since new is almost 29mpg

That's incredible. That is significantly more than I get now. Thanks

It's clear that diesel has incredible range, how about power when cruising at highway speeds? If you need to step on it and get around someone, does it leave you wanting more?

It's pure torque Russ, no issue at all. It's rocket from a stop and pulls like dream on the freeway. The ONLY thing I miss is a nice exhaust note, but I'll take the fuel economy and the torque over that.

I concur... owning 2 diesels 335D and the X5D the torque is incredible! These engines are made for the highway.

Thanks! With all the guys talking about the sound and power of their 50i monsters, I was leaning that way. But, with how pricey fuel is these days I could never justify it. I think fuel economy of the 35d will be the way for me. Not to mention torque off the line and possible towing(very unlikely for towing, I can't afford to have toys yet lol)

So an update from me....

I have driven roughly 500 miles, and my average highway/city driving has returned 30 mpg. No complaints here!

If I didnt care about having another gas guzzler in the stable especially for the family vehicle, I would probably get a QX80 instead of a X5 50i to be honest. Its going to be really unfortunate if they kill the diesel for the X5 and X7, because its the only thing keeping our SUV in the brand. I would consider a hybrid X5/7 but only if its the I6 version and not the I4 wimpy one.

The qx80 is way to big for my family. It's only my wife and i right now, and our 95 pound hound lol.
I agree, the hybrid should be a 6, not a 4. Not sure why they went that route, other than saving the environment and "better" fuel economy. I think they would sell a lot more if they were a 6. I almost bought the 40e last year but couldn't commit. Also, very unsure of the reliability of the hybrid drive train. Think it would cost a small fortune to fix out of warranty.

The "e" in the X7 has to be a 6c, I think it will be too in the 2020 X5. None of my X's were ever out of warranty, and decided long ago not to have one out of warranty, need a reliable family hauler so it will be replaced every 2-3 yrs. Because if it was out of warranty I would want to fix it myself and I have let cars sit for a year until I got the time lol
