You have to be very careful when dealing with cars having such shady use history. If you really, really want it then have at least one 3rd party inspection done on it. There are tons of places, which will do PPI for you. You chose the shop, don't let the seller drive this process.
I recently purchased x5 from Florida (I live in Chicago). I bought it from a private party, he had the car maintained at a dealership, where he originally leased and then purchased it from. All the records were there and everything checked out. I flew out there, had breakfast, we went to DMV, got temp license and then drove it back home to Chicago. Long but wonderful drive. Pay attention to little details as they can make or break the sale. For example, for me it was important to buy privately because tax is collected differently. Full purchase amount is taxed when buying from a dealer but there is a cap of $1500 when buying privately. So if you buy privately then the more expensive the car is the bigger bang for a buck you will get. However, I didn't realize that Florida doesn't share the same sentiments and local government wanted to tax the whole amount. Man, I almost blew a gasket right there and then but seller came to the rescue and we worked around it. You can buy a car from anywhere in the country but it will cost you research and some risk. Rewards can be plentiful as you can (potentially) save a lot of money and you will need it right after you sign on a dotted line. Either for vacation or new set of wheels, which you will need since you are taking the car up North. Winter tires will cost you pretty penny - I'm finding it out myself. Plus wheels are staggered, can't swap front to back like it's the case with most cars. It took me 9 months of patiently waiting until all the stars align before I pulled a trigger. I suggest you walk away from this one. |

I’d recommend to first negotiate the price with the dealer and condition of purchase contingent upon the pre-purchase inspection (PPI) report coming clean. For the PPI, you can request the dealer to drop it off at the nearest BMW dealer (preferably a different chain than the selling dealer) or an independent mechanic - they usually will accommodate the request if you’ve reached an agreement on price. If the selling dealer won’t drop the car off for a PPI, you can book a mobile inspection through carchex or similar establishments for about $200. Don’t skip this step, it’s vital to your purchase. If the dealer will simply not agree to a PPI, then walk away.

Again, thanks for chiming in with feedback everyone.
I agree that a PPI is necessary, pending final agreement on price. The dealer came back a second time and is now knocking $2k off the ask, so $42,991. However, with all of their dealer and misc fees the total is actually $44,363 out the door. Is this still a decent price? Again, the car is a '17 Msport with 20" black 469 wheels, 15k miles and 1-owner clean Carfax. Non-CPO. On top of the above, I'll be paying $300 for PPI and $845 to ship from Florida to NYC. |

Private sales are all about minimizing the loss while dealer sales are all about maximizing the profit. Dealer will never match private party's price and value if you do your due diligence and are patient. My dealership just offered me new tire purchase for $1200 and I'm thinking 'this ain't bad' until I saw the quote and it was for ... 2 tires WTF? Some things, like having new key cut, you have to do at a dealership, but not all. Two cars with similar options, age and milage will be worth the same and the only difference will be how much they were originally purchased for. It is then when you 'make' your money on it. Enjoy the car, you'll like it a lot |

Yeah, I totally understand. I only shared my own experiences with buying cars and not everyone wants to do the same thing. Buying from a dealer has some fantastic perks, no doubt, but the price you have to pay for it .... damn . I think that it was the only point I was trying to make.

Price is good even if its not super loaded, my 2017 35d which has everything but adaptive and 3rd row, supposedly with 24k miles is worth $50k+ which is very sad as it was $77k sticker, but I dont care as its a lease, and why I will never buy one new.

However, there are practically zero late model, low miles X5s being sold private party. It's not a realistic option for these cars. And if you care about CPO you're locked into a BMW dealer.

This is a CPO booklet, and we are talking about the factory warranty. There are 2 different things. OP is talking about buying a car which is still covered by factory warranty which is still remaining.

Do you even read the thread? Or you are randomly generating news posts? This car is NOT CPO! This car is still covered by factory warranty, bumper to bumper, this car is being sold used but it is still under warranty. |

Thats what you guys dont get. The "bumper to bumper" is only for the ORIGINAL owner. Trying to help the OP by telling him there is NO warranty, none. Call BMW if you don't believe me. |

The remainder of the 4yr/50k factory warranty transfers to the next owner(s), regardless of whether there’s CPO certification is involved. CPO certification can be transferred via private party sale.
