Carrying long boards, can the bottom stay open
I need to grab some 8 ft trim and was wondering if there is a way to have the top hatch closed with the bottom open? If not can the top part come down and leave a gap so the boards can pop out? Thanks

the top hatch won't stay down unless you tie it down since it locks into the tailgate. You can drive with the tailgate down and top tied down; use a tension tie down strap or bungee secured to a trunk floor sliding eye or the seat back latch point if the seat is in the up position. Be careful your trim doesn't slide out when you accelerate

Thanks. But with the lower part down. The top won’t power close. Is it ok to manually push down? And I guess I’ll drive in ECO so they won’t fly out.

Will the trim fit between the front seats on top of the armrest with hatch closed? I am sincerely interested to know. I have been debating on replacing my beater (2008 pilot) with something nicer (ieF15) but don’t want to sacrifice utility. I carried several 8ft deck boards recently by laying on the armrest but without risking touching the dash. The pilot is similar in overall length at 189 inches. However, I don’t know if the X5 dashboard sits back further due to the straight 6.

Yeah, no kidding. For the cost of fixing even some minor interior damage, you could rent one of those nice little flatbeds for 3 or 4 days. Or I guess you could leave the damage un-fixed and pay for it in shame instead of $. Makes no sense either way.

I can also safely say that a 60" bathrub(in box) fits fine with tailgate closed and 1000 lbs of wood pellets for heating can fit in the vehicle. |

I've carried fence boards, trim, lumber....all sorts of stuff with my BMW's using various OEM BMW Roof Racks and those heavy duty "twist tie" things from Home Depot.
The racks are a great investment. I will add that you can also sneak in 6 foot fence boards into an E46 passenger seat with it folded all the way flat. Just wrap the boards up in some drop cloth, etc.
