Oil You Guys Use ?

I’ve been looking at ditching BMW branded oil for my oil changes, nothing wrong with it but as we all know it’s just rebranded. I’m looking to switch for something I can easily pick up at the parts store.

From research BMW switched to Pennzoil for recommend brand. I found Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30 LL-04 readily available also found Mobile 1 Euro Formula 0W-40 LL-01. Just wanted to see what you guys are currently running.

As others have mentioned, use Liqui Moly Liechtlauf 5-40 plus 1.5 cans Ceratec additive (only Ceratec once every 50K, use 1.5 cans Mos2 additive for all other oil changes)

Original N63, 160,000 miles, ran leak down test at 150K miles when I fixed the valve stem seals, all cylinders within 5%, bearing surfaces on cams looked excellent, with just stage 1 tune and a laggy transmission that has about a second delay between shifts (don't listen to BMW kids, your transmission oil is NOT lifetime) I am still belting out low 4 second 1-foot 0-60 times. Not to shabby for a 8 year old 160,000+ mile 5300lb tank. I attribute much of this to the superior protection this oil and the additives gives.

The N63 and all variants run hot, the 5-40 really shines here however if you are in a very cold climate, you will want to reach out to LiquiMoly for recommendation on what viscosity to use. They have excellent tech support.

You guys have any thoughts on rotella t6 w5-40?

Used it on my WRX for 10 years. And a lot of other car forums love it for turbo cars.

Diesel oils have more zinc, which is not good for catalytic converters.

Personally I use mobil 1 or castrol euro oil that I can buy at Walmart Cheap.

Wow...those wear surfaces are pristine. Impressive.

As turboawd mentions, oils designed for diesel engines have a specialized additive package. I ran Rotella T 15w40 in Caterpillar diesel heavy truck engines years ago. The main contaminate in that application was soot, and the additive package in Rotella T was designed to mitigate its effects. It would have been completely mistaken to therefore assume that the same oil would have been well advised for the gasoline-powered high-compression leaded-gas automotive engines I was putzing with at the time. Additives are the most expensive components of an oil formulation; oil blenders don't just throw in "a little of this and a little of that" to make their oils universally applicable.

good points on Rotella (as well as other diesel oils) and to add to that the fact that if you're still running a flat tappet cam(older weekend toys perhaps) , they have zinc as part of the additive package which is an important lubricant.

As for our modern vehicles and synthetics, I started using Amsoil in '76, zero issues.

First time did oil change for my f15 sdrive35 since i bought it last February. Went to the car shop and the mechanic show me that he has to use the bmw oil as recommended. I don't mind since he quote the same price as if i use liqui moly.
Glad to find this thread, so i can see what other oil good for this engine.

LIQUI-Moly for both my F15d and F10 550i. Blackstone lab tests show very good results at 7k change intervals in both.
