Question Premium gas necessary?

We just got a 2014 X5. Is it really necessary to use premium gas? Would 89 do? What harm would 87 cause? Thanks!

The computer will adjust the timing and operating parameters to adjust the engine operation to the conditions and the quality of the fuel. But, there are limits. When the octane is below the range it can handle, it could cause engine damage. You are only guaranteed the design performance if it has the desired octane. When the computer detunes the engine, you will get less MPG and performance, so in the end, it may end up costing about the same or even more to use the lower octane since you'll use more of it. Driving very conservatively, you may not notice the performance differences, but most people do notice.

I use 91 the recommended grade. You may not have seen this recent thread, from 87 to 91, varied thoughts that you may ponder. Posted are some very good analysis.

I've parked the F30 in the garage for now (due to sharp increase in Gasoline prices here in Canada)... In contrary, Diesel price which was almost as high as Premium during winter has dropped significantly...right now, it is even lower than 87!!!
I'm currently enjoying the "Diesel experience!"...

+1...I wouldn't use anything lower than what is indicated as "minimum"...
On my previous X3 it was 91 as minimum...
On my F30 it is 89 as minimum...

In general premium fuel runs about $0.10/gallon more than the mid grade. Assuming approximately 15 gallons/fill up you're talking a difference of $1.50 every time you fill up.

Given your driving a $60k+ vehicle it shouldn't be an issue spending an extra $1.50

Or should have gotten a diesel if you were looking for savings. Diesel is $0.20 less than Premium right now in my area.

Definitely not 87, unsure why someone would.

Source: Roundel 4/13, Mike Miller. Sounds good except his philosophical comments at the end.
