FYI if you're running lipos on a brushed motor, even with a heat sink it's going to burn up quick because of the draw. I went to the track at Larry's RC about once a week and detonated two brushed motors running lipos, walked over the counter and got a mamba max brushless.

If you think your brushed motors pull, 2wd rwd with a brushless and the slash will be doing wheelies all day.

Ohh yea I'm very aware what mayhem can be unleashed with a brushless motor. Maybe one day I'll upgrade, but don't feel the need for more speed now.

I used to run/race these things back in the late 80's/early 90's on national and european championship level. Great fun but (back then) pretty expensive.
It must have come a long way with lithium batteries and brushless motors.
When I was toying around even nickel metalhydride batteries were years away (we all used the good old nicd ones....7,2V and a whopping 1300mah per pack )

But its a great way to learn vehicle dynamics as aspects like camber, caster, toe, stiffer/weaker arb's, springs and shock oil are fairly easily changed (on the more competition oriented models) and you definately feel the difference in control of the vehicle.
I'd love to start racing again but it takes up so much time, travelling to the different circuits, car prep/testing etc etc (I used to struggle for cash.... now I struggle for time)

Cars that I had that/ran in competition (all 1:10 electro off road, which was very popular at the time) that I can remember
4wd
Schumacher CAT XL (when that car came out, it was like something from the future)
CAT 2000 (successor of the xl)
Kyosho optima mid? something?

2wd
Schumacher topcat
schumacher cougar (succesor)
Associated RC10 (somehow not my favorite)
Kyosho ultima something....

Plus a few more leisure oriented cars (some kind of jeep and some monster truck), but my heart was with off road racing.

I remember that around the time when I quit the hobby, a brand like traxxas just came looking as a cost alternative quality car. They have come far I see.

Pretty cool rc history there.

Lipo (lithium polymer) batteries are basically the standard now.

Forgive my ignorance I know nothing about RC cars but am thinking about buying this as a gift. Is it crap or decent stuff?

Looks pretty good: Oil shocks, brushless motor, metal diff and drive shaft, graphite chassis... Though I'd prefer the Alpine White DTM version.

As a kid in the 80s I was really into R/C. I spent all my money at the local hobby shops, upgrading my cars with shocks, ESCs and motors. I used to read through hobby shop catalogs like they were titty mags. Some of the cars I owned..

Tamiya Wild One
Tamiya Lunch Box
Tamiya Williams Honda F1
Team Assoc RC12L

Recently, in an attempt to get my kids in R/C, I picked up a Tamiya Sand Viper... which I wouldn't let them touch. Then a Lunch Box Black... which they aren't allowed to touch. And then a TB-04 Raybrig Acura NSX Concept GT... which they really aren't allowed to touch.

Now, I've got my eyes on a TA-02T pickup, you know... for the kids.

I also want to get one of these RTR Carisma DTM cars, but building these things is most of the fun. Getting one prebuilt feels like I'm just being lazy.

I would love to build one one day. But with three young kids I'm luck to find time to take a leak some days

The strange thing is, I looked at how the competition world of rc car racing now is organized in my country, but it looks like it's way less popular than in the 80's and early 90's.
A lot of classes have just disappeard. There's only 1 offroad class left and thats a 1:6 nitro big scale class. And the rest is outdoor circuit (1:5 1:8 1:10 nitro and 1:10 electro)
No 1:12 indoor anymore?!? (this used to be a huge class back then)

Has the world of online gaming became an all destroying competitor to this hobby?

If I look at Efra (european wide championchips) there are hardly any european class races in those classes anymore...
(still some 1:10 electro off road but only a few races in a few countries)

Heh.

Never did get the appeal of having an all black car.

I bought my BSM / CR convertible sight unseen and was a little afraid of the red. Luckily I LOVE it. Drove a triple black one at the dealer a few weeks ago, didn't like it at all. Go figure.

I think you need some contrasting/accent color, otherwise it'd get pretty old fast.

Totally agree. The vert is BSM with red and our wagon is BSM saddle which is a total show stopper.

I used to build back in high school/college. Had a HPI Nitro RS4 and a Mini Pro. Spent close to a thousand on it. Nowadays with less time and other, more expensive hobbies, I was looking for something more casual but still a lot of fun. Ended up getting a Losi Mini Rally Car and Truck for me and my son. Lots of fun, and we built a big track in the back where these mini 1/24 cars can really stretch their legs. Something the 1/10th scale would find very small and tight. These things are light and pretty much indestructible compared to 1/10, so I don't mind if my son crashes!

http://www.losi.com/Products/Default...dID=LOSB0241T4

Radio included, just pick up some extra batteries and 2 sets of tires and off you go!!
