M performance brakes vs m performance kit with standard brakes

Hi, yes i know there are threads about this but i would say not quite the same. Brakes need changing, it is an opportunity to buy the mperformance brake kit, however for the money I could get my standard brakes changed (i have a bigger brake kit) and add the performance package (which increases torque and hp). I hear that m performance brakes produce a lot of dust (compared to the standard brakes) and i recall there were squeeking issues with former X5M/X6M brakes. I can handle the dust (sorta) but squeeking is an issue. Would be nice to have a bit more hp as the car would be more fun. I have a 30d with msport package (19" winter staggered and 20" for the summer). All feedback much appreciated. Thanks

Main reason why I love the factory brakes. They are almost dust free! And to tell you the truth, as a family car the brakes are great. I drive spirited often and have no complaints. Only thing you don't get is the appearence with mpb. They really do look great

Actually the improved braking performance/feel of the MPBK is very significant compared to stock. Coming from sporty sedans/cars i am satisfied with the power of my X5 but I always felt the brakes to be a little lacking compared to what I'm used to. I always find myself needing to apply more brake to stop because I am still pulling up to the car infront of me too fast near the end. I never could recalibrate my foot to apply the right amount of force to slow down the X5 perfectly in close situations. After the MPBK all that went away and I feel like I have back the braking performance I was use to from my prior cars. It gives me the confidence to drive spiritedly without worrying if I will slow down fast enough if the car infront short stops. To me it's night and day difference and I am willing to trade having more brake dust for it. I don't even want to change the pads incase it risks giving up any initial bite/pedal feel. I just love how they are now minus the MASSIVE brake dust!

+1.
Since I took off the Brembo, I missed it.
I can't get the X5 to stop on demand as close as I demanded.
It felt like driving my odyssey all over again, which I have been doing lately.

i had the m performance brakes installed on my f31. they dust far more than the standard set up but if you don't mind keeping your vehicle clean the improved braking is a fair trade-off. i also had the squeal on my x5m... the dealer resolved the issue by replace all four corners with new pads and rotors which replaced the previous version. no more squeal after. i did not experience any squealing or irritating noises from the m performance kit either.

Actually this morning's temp was hovering in the single digits and I noticed that my MPBK did squeal a bit right before coming to a full stop. Lucky the sound insulation on the X5 is so good you could barely hear it even with the radio off. Radio on its a non issue.

was it consistent or just the first initial squeal you get from possible rust or just being frozen together?

I noticed it after about 30mins of driving already. Granted all of that was in stop in go traffic so I don't think the brakes ever got up to operating temperature.

Oh no.... I had the squeeking sound on my E92 perf brakes, they changed the whole setup once or even twice, can't remember. Brakes on my E71 also squeeked (had quite a big set on a 40d) and I just couldn't be bothered to turn it in for a service. Insulation on the F15 is quite supreme comapred to the earlier BMWs that I owned but I can't stand the squeeking when I am slowly approaching the traffic light. Will go to the dealer tomorrow and explore my options. Thanks a lot for the update!!! Really appreciated!

please report back because this would be one of the first upgrades i would perform on my vehicle. if squeal is inherent with the brake kit i would spend the money elsewhere.

I will let others with MPBK chime in. My setup isn't your typical MPBK because I installed the X5M front rotors which can affect brake noise as well. Again the noise is very muted and I only heard it right before the truck comes to a complete stop. Not one of those 30mph squealing all the way to a full stop.

My OE rear brakes squeal rather loudly when cold, anything less than 5 degrees C and they howl. For those with the MPBK, are you running the pads that come with the kit? Because of the high dust, what about swapping out the pads? I'm running Akebono (rear) and Pagid (front) on my Audi, and both are near dust free.

Hi All,

Those of you who upgraded to the MPBK, if you purchase the kit yourself and have it installed by a dealer, does it still carry the factory warranty? Also does the maintenance plan still apply ? Meaning when the pads and rotor wear out, does BMW still replace them , or do you have to pay out of pocket? Thanks.

i believe rotors and pads are wear and tear items and always require out of pocket replacement?

My MPBK does have a squeaking noise. dont want to call it a squeal, but it does squeak.

Really ? My sales guys said the rotor and pads are replaced free as part of the factory maintenance plan. At least for the stock brakes.

Does your MPBK squeak all the time , or only under certain conditions?

Mine squeal when they are cold. Once they are up to normal operating temperature they are silent. Honestly doesn't bother me and you could only make out the sound when the radio is off or the windows are open. This plus massive brake dust is still a small price to pay for EXCEPTIONAL braking ability and feel.

I spoke to my service representative who has experience with high performance cars (other brands). He tells me that the fact performance breaks squeek when cold is abs normal. They are designed that way (he says) so that they spread when hot and have still optimal performance. When i asked the price quote he immediately told me they squeek when cold....

I've had the MPBK on my f15 for about a year now. Never produced any squeek, but like others have said, the brake dust is an issue. One trip and it will look like you haven't washed your wheels in weeks. Coating your wheels in something like c quartz finest or opticoat will make cleaning them much easier.

I guess in that case a darker wheel would be preferable so the dust don't show as much
I had my wheels coated with Ceramic Pro when i did the whole car. They do clean easy. I have a wheel brush that I use when I wash the car. Although I wonder if the MPBK will fit into the M sport 19in wheels? Otherwise I'd have to change wheels too.
