2017 x5 with roof box
Just installed a Thule Sonic XL ($650) on my 2017 x5 with BMW base support system. ($225)
I'll have to adjust it back a little bit more. |

lookin good and makes our x5 more practical.
quick question, my x5 comes with M package (no step-up bar on both sides) but i m considering to get a cargo box but wondering how to reach it? or do you actually have to step on the side bar in order to reach the cargo box? i am 5"11. |

Looks great, would probably look best centered on the roof as opposed to hanging over the windshield which would probably require you to move both bar supports back 6-8". I would love to have one of these for the occasional road trip, the only problem is where to store it for the other 50 weeks in the year.

I think the step bar is pretty annoying. Cause the dirt on it, gets on the back of your pant legs when you get out of car. Just got it for my kids. |

Also the Thule box support attachments are as forward as they go... (meaning I can't use to the box settings to move it further back) So now, I have to move the base support back and not follow BMWs recommendations. It may look better to us, but I wonder that creates a new aerodynamic problem... either way I'm moving it back, because it looks dumb! Thanks advice! |

The running boards on this generation are so narrow you basically need to be opening your doors to use them anyways, but they do work to protect against splash up of stones especially.

You can (if You want), move roofbox quite much more back. Here is picture of my Thule Excellence + Thule wingbars. Optimazed as far back as tailgate still opens normally. I am also having Thule Stepup stair for easiers access to roofbox.. nice to have eventhough i am 1.92m tall..

Yeah - mother in law..
Alpine skis, cross country skis, snowboards, poles, skates etc.. and 3 pairs each... AND if still some space left, boots also. |

I got a roof box last year. I really liked having a roof box. Made travel so easy and really didn't have to worry about space at all. Basically I could fit everything I usually fit into my car except it all went into the roof box and I still had space left over, then pile in all the passengers without having to care about if the people were getting squeezed. It was extra nice because I didn't have to worry about scratching up headliner or other trim.
Eventually got rid of it because I didn't have a place to store it, and I was having problems getting into many public garages due to height restrictions. So those two together was a problem for me.

I bought a roof box this year too. With a kid and associated equipment, plus carrying the OE compact spare, it doesn't leave a lot of room for stuff for a multiday trip.
However, unlike most of people here, I can't stomach paying $500+ for a new box. I grabbed a used 2-year old Thule locally for $250. There's many deals to be had on CL if you look frequently.
