Dinan on the Flowbench tonight

An interesting afternoon. At 12" of H20 the stock M filter flowed 451 cfm. When the media was cut off a stock filter the flow increased to 487 cfm. That was my "target" for the much larger Dinan filter....to equal no filter in the box and let the entrance diameter be the controlling orifice for flow.

BIG SURPRISE........Dinan flowed 571 cfm at the same 12" of H20.

Took a little time to figure out the flow increase over the no media filter out.

This picture explains why Dinan flows better than a gutted stock air filter. Look at the difference in the inlet transitions from the filter media to the opening. The factory filter has no Venturi and a blunt transition. Dinan did a GREAT job by incorporating a long venturi from the filter media to the base inlet. This greatly enhances flow through the opening. Very nice tunnel effect.Kudos to Dinan.

Here is a 2017 factory ZO6 Corvette vs Dinan filter. Very sad design by GM to use only one filter this small. It outflowed the Dinan at 618 cfm vs 571cfm, BUT the ZO6 only has ONE filter. 1142 CFM for BMW vs 618 CFM for the ZO6. Even the Factory stock M flow is 902CFM. And the ZO6 is rated at 650hp. Sad deal .

Obviously the Dinan has much airflow than stock at the same depression. The big question now....is how much more hp is that worth.....I did not install the Dinan yet...might wait and do a back to back Vbox test this weekend....would be nice to see a 0.10 second reduction in ET and + 1mph in the 1/4...............

Very interesting info. Thanks for doing this!

Glad I didn't waste 1K for my Dinan setup for just engine "bling"

You guys are welcome. Just trying to pay back some as you guys have shared a lot with the forum also. Makes it a fun community.

Testing parts that actually work is rewarding. I’ve tested a bunch of duds in the past.

Dinan should be thanking you. You posted more data and photos of their product than they have.

Seriously hit the nail hard with this one. I wish all vendors and tuners would give information like this. The only company that I have seen show more information then just HP and TQ figures was Evolve with the Eventuri intakes. Hopefully theyll make something some day for us. I was on the fence about doing this in the future with my car but with the information OnfireX has provided I think this is now the direction ill have to move into If i could find a good deal or just wait till im done getting some other parts.

Dinan did a nice job developing but a poor job proving it was worth buying. Nice work!

Yes they do. Side note does the Dinan filter fit stock X5M intake box or do you have to have the cf lid?

No. You need the Dinan lid. The filters will not fit the stock enclosure without it.

A small photo comparison of the Dinan filter next to the OEM one off my X5M. This sucker is much bigger.

Doesn't look any bigger? Maybe just the angle

It's the angle. While the same length (so they fit in the airbag), there's obviously wayyyy more filter area.

Take a closer look. The Dinan has filter media 360* around where the OEM filter only has filter paperin a rectangle on the front and back side (and the back side is smaller than the front side), the top and bottom of the OEM are just plastic, not filter paper.

Not to mention the Dinan filter is so much larger you need a new lid just to fit it in the airbox.

If the picture isn't enough for you then there's always math:
228% increase in filter area (stock: 44.5in˛ each, Dinan: 146.2in˛ each)

A lot of flow magic in the Dinan filter inlet. Flip your stock filter around and compare the two inlets.

That blows. Who has the best price on this Dinan setup?
