Blind spot mirror add on's . . .

I just drove back from NYC Sunday in a rented Chevy Suburban. This thing was huge.
Had all the bells and whistles but handled like a boat in rough seas . . . awful.

But I did like the blind spot mirror on the far left OEM mirror. they were rimless so I don't know if these were an add on option or standard?

I've had a few sudden surprises from cars shooting up fast on the highway as I feel the X5's mirrors are a tad too small especially when I'm towing my small boat.
I don't have the passing alert upgrade on my X5.

Do people feel that these rimless ones on Amazon will stay on the mirror being its heated?
I never go through car washes. But my dealer does wash the X5 with each visit, but that's hopefully not that often.

for $11 why not try them? I don’t think the heated mirrors get extremely hot.

Ok thx. Thats what i figured too. I’ll order for each of my vehicles and report back on their usefulness. Had to drive my Wife's Audi Q5 to dealer today for a recall check. Her SUV is smaller than mine yet her mirrors are huge compared to the X5.

Just measured both diagonally. Audi is 8 inches where as the X5 is only 6 inches. Both are 6 inches in height but that extra 2 inches on the Audi makes for a big field of view difference.

The blind spot mirrors I already ordered should help me a lot on the X5. I'm putting them on hers too. She also has the driver alert when a car is overtaking us which I wish I had . . . But used car buyers can't be too choosy as for a 2016 my X5 was in primo shape and only 14k.

They will stay no problem. The only thing is I had similar ones before and it's often very hard to focus and see something in them clearly. Maybe my eyes are not as sharp anymore, but sometimes it's not easy to catch correct spot during busy traffic when you only have a second to glance over to the mirrors

Alternative solution is BMW OEM wide angle version mirror for our x5. You just pop old one out and pop new one in (heated and with all bells and whistles). It just gives you a wider angle view and is very easy to use - I have one for driver side only and it saved me couple times already when changing lanes

Like this one (just for demonstration purpose - please don't buy from seller without checking everything as some of them sell non-oem ones): https://www.ebay.com/p/BMW-X5-Series...d=253068716851

I used these decades ago. They are better than nothing, but it's not easy to see in them because everything is distorted and the mirror is not in the same plane as the side mirror. Also, because they are stuck on, they will fog up and snow/ice will not melt. The heated mirror does not get hot enough to affect the adhesive. Mine stayed glued on for years, even in a car wash.

Another option is to order the European spec aspherical side mirror replacement glass. They are not US legal because of primitive regulations. I've gotten them for all my other European cars. Big improvement. They sell them for all the Euro brands: Audi, VW, Porsche, BMW etc.. Haven't gotten them for the BMWs yet because not sure if they a compatible with BSD. They can be ordered with heating and dimming to match your options.

Thx. I had read that thread earlier. Nice the way they just pop out so easily.
It's not the cost as much as the ease of slapping a little round mirror on. I figure I'll give these 2 inch mirrors a shot first for $10.99 for the pair. I don't need to focus that close I'm thinking as I just want to be aware of a fast moving object that comes up on my blind spot.

Update: ya, these $10.99 blind spot add ons are pretty useless. As Dush said above they make things too small to be useful and actually are probably more dangerous to use as cars are so small they appear very far away yet are closer than I thought they were.

Makes my X5 look a little Mickey Mouse too.

I'll pop them back off and toss them.

I'll re-read that other thread that talks of getting a "new" wide angle one that I can replace my OEM regular mirror.

Purchase the EU/ROW aspherical mirrors. They're OEM and function as designed.

Popped off easily after I warmed them with a hair dryer.

The convex mirrors are not great. But I don't think you've got them positioned optimally.

When I used these convex mirrors, after much trial and error I found the best location for them was not on the distal edge of the side mirror. It was the opposite. I put the small round mirror low on the medial side i.e. the side closer to the driver. Then I angled my side mirrors out as far as they would go so that a car in the adjacent lane would enter my peripheral vision just as it disappeared from the distal edge of the side mirror. I use the regular side mirror and rear view mirror to elminate the blind spots. I used the convex mirror to see the side of the car and anything right next to the car.

Positioned correctly you should not be able to see the side of the car in the side mirrors at all - unless you move your head. Like this:

https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...id-blind-spots

The US DOT mirrors suck because drivers have to make a choice: either see the blind spot or see the side of the car. Can't see both.

The Euro mirror are wider angle at the distal edges so drivers can see both the blindspot and the side of the car. The biggest improvement is the driver's side mirror, so if you're only going to get 1, skip the passenger side mirror.

Can someone post a picture or two of what the wide angle mirror looks like going down the road?

Thx. Good info. I was using the positioning of the oem ones that were mounted
on the new chevy suburban i had rented last week. Those on the Suburban worked good. These cheapo add on ones made the obects too tiny and were actually dangerous as cars were a lot closer than they appeared. Wifey thought the ones i put on her SUV were also distracting. Like the poster below id like to see what the oem wide angle mirror on the drivers side looks like in actual use?

I'm in the middle of a final exams this and next week, but I'll post a pic after that (if someone won't post it before me). I have a old regular oem one too, so I can tape it below the wide angle mirror to visually compare both mirrors. Unfortunately I won't be able to post before Oct.27

Oops sorry. I'll go grab them. Best I could do at the moment. Not driving today as I'm flying home for Christmas today. But as you can kinda tell it's not that much of a change.

Yes. Yes you do. But do you see it in the blind spot is the question.
