Any idea how long the DIY version took to install? My dealer did it in 30 minutes.

@Baunton, I think you may mistaken the grill trim with the kidney grill.

I personally think the fastest you can do this even with the tools and equipment the dealer has, it should take at least 45minutes to 1 hour.

While the DIY I wrote was based on hand tools which most of the forum members have. With this DIY, it should take about 30-45minutes per side.

R33 - I see that you have removed the tire for installing the trims? Is it necessary to take the tire out or did you just took it out just to have good pictures?
Yes, you need to remove it to have better access.
I tried to do it without removing the tires, it took me much longer time as I have to turn the steering wheel back and forth to have access.

Is it possible to do this procedure with just using epoxy? I know, I know, this is not the correct way to do it and it is back-yard creativity, BUT for those who are not comfortable is removing pieces or have the facility to do so, it might be an option. I looked at mine and there are holes in place already, but I don't know if the plastic would be an acceptable bonding agent.

Well, I wouldn't recommend it as with time and improper epoxy, it will comes off.

Kind of what I thought in the back of my mind, but I thought I would ask someone who would know!

Hey r33, is this essentially the same procedure needed to access the reflectors too? How tough was it to replace the new rivets for the fender flare?

Dear R33,

Would the fins work on a 50i? Proper installation through dealer not epoxy of course.

I am planning on replacing the solid grille panel with the half-solid/half-open grille on the one side (other side is already half-open) and installing these fins. Not sure what is behind the full solid grille so wondering if placing the half-open panel is possible and/or will expose something that should not be exposed.

Thanks...

Here is the DIY for the reflector.

The rivets is very easy, you just need to hold it in place while pulling the extended pin. The pin will break by itself once fully pulled and secured.

@busta1978, it does work on the 50i as long as you have the M-Sport bumper.
I believe on the 50i, the right side is open grill already. I am not sure the configuration on UAE version. Behind that open grill it sits the oil cooler, in my case, the 35i, it doesn't have anything behind it. It doesn't have anything that not supposed to be exposed, so you are fine with changing it to the open grill.

Let me know if you need to order them, I can ship it international also. Have a few set in stock.

@r33
Thanks for the quick reply R33. I have actually taken the decision not to insert these parts because, and I know I will made fun of here, when I saw your post on how to actually install them it looks like too much surgeory work to do on a brand new car. I was hoping it would be a quick clip on and off and when it comes to such things I am really scared.

Maybe I will do them later on when the car goes in for its first service. Or maybe, if it will work, I will apply the X5 M bumper front and rear with the quad exhausts. I used to own a 6 series before and did that. The exhaust sound on that thing was amazing. Will see when the X5 M get launched later in the year.

Thanks again...

No, don't worry about anyone else. It is your car, they can say so much about it but as long as you are happy with it, it is your own enjoyment.

r33 thank you very much for this thread.

If ok with you I will add a few things from my own experience.

This is a serious serious pain if you have a diesel, as has been noted, if you have a d there is something big and immovable blocking access to the rear of the grill on one side, to fit the locking washers to the rear of the new trim.

I would class myself as reasonably handy and had no problem whipping the wheel off and removing the wheel arch liner but I would say it’s almost impossible to do just by removing the wheel arch liner and am curious how anyone else has managed it, so please share anyone else that has attempted this.

I managed to get one washer on from the wheel arch but couldn’t reach in any further to the other three. After much fiddling I managed to disconnect the cold air feed pipe from the lower middle grill to the brakes, this let me come in from the other side and get 2 of the washers on. The third washer remains unconnected; I just couldn’t see any way in without major surgery. I don’t know whether the bumper would need to come off, or if the headlight could come out, or if you could remove trim to come up from below, but I am not willing to go that far as there seemed no obvious way to me, so I hope it holds with just the three!

Other side a doddle as per r33’s excellent instructions.

Cheers,

Stuart.

@stupot, no worry. Thanks for your input. It will sure helps other forum members.
I have yet to experience the installation on the 35d and 50i.
Maybe someone local willing to let me work on their car, so I can update the DIY.

Just FYI, my shop used a little epoxy glue to attach the trim piece to the bumper so it doesn't "flex" as much. It flexes a bit if just the rivets are used.

Yea, I was thinking to put a grey double side tape on it.

Coming to London anytime soon, your free to put them on my 40d?

My dealer wants to charge me over £250 to fit, that's way for than the parts!

The grille fin parts ended up arriving just in time before I received my car (delivery was delayed due to fix that had to be done to rear manual sun shade) so I decided to take the plunge and they are being installed. Hoping to get the car within 48 hours after which I will be posting some lovely pics.
