I just put a deposit down on a 50i. I haven't even seen her yet. But she's a 17 with under 5k miles on it. It seemed too good an opportunity to pass up. Black on black on black, just how I like it.

I drove a 14 a few weeks ago and loved it. So this should be fun.

Still somewhat debating this vs an RRS SC Dynamic. But this is 20k less (as that would be new) is completely loaded (RRS is mostly loaded) and is much more under the radar.

I suppose when I see it, and drive it, I'll know for sure which direction to go in.

Your statement about being under the radar was important to me. Lots of x5's around to blend in with.

In the 50i/M you don't measure Miles Per Gallon but rather in terms of Smiles Per Gallon.
I did one early change (myself) at about 5000 mi, using BMW oil. The old oil was slightly darker amber in color but still clear. Was probably a waste given what came out.

IIRC, the dealer procedure actually adds a bit of oil above the full mark (as indicated in the display), and yes this is ok according to BMW...to avoid having to add between changes.

I refilled mine just to the top of the (electronic) range, by trial and error, adding a bit at a time till it was just there. 5000 miles later when the change message came up, it had dropped to about 2/3 from lower mark to upper mark. So I used about 1/3 of a liter over 5000 mi.

It'll stop you fully when traffic does, or vary your speed as traffic moves.
And if ACC stops for you, you can push the RESUME button on the steering wheel or tap the gas to get moving again. It goes automatically if you are stopped for 3s or less.

Exactly my thoughts.

I used to be negative about BMW in general because they diluted the brand. They ultimately took the prestige out of it by creating too many models. They took the mystique out by making the brand available to the masses.

Now that's my favorite point about the brand. They still make incredible cars, some models and versions better than others, but now with so many on the road, most people don't think twice.

When I drove an RRS, it stuck out like a sore thumb.

I did not know this. I always just tap the gas. Now I will just push the resume button. I swear I learn something new about my X5 everyday.

Ha. Yeah...sometimes.

And don't get me wrong, I am the type that sometimes enjoys a little attention. That said, I was getting the wrong kind. My customers would look at the RRS and make all sorts of misconceptions about how much money I am making off of them.

I think the BMW presents the perfect image. Doing pretty well, clearly successful, but not over the top.

Still actually driving my Jeep SRT to work, but I imagine that will soon change.

I have only had the 50i for a day (not even), but I can already tell this will be a serious love affair.

BMW was always a mass brand in Europe. Many soldiers and most officers stationed in Bavaria got them. The difference there is that nearly every option was a la carte. You'd find 5ers and 7ers with manuals and cloth seats. In the early 2000s, the lemon lot on any base in America was full of some really odd Bimmers converted to US spec. The auto craft shop on Rose Barracks in Vilseck was a BMW tinkerer's heaven.

Enjoy the new X5

That's the problem with America huh? People are envious of someone else's success and of perhaps will think your success to ill gotten rather that you achieved it with hard work, possibly taking risks they've never even considered.

OP here - brought my 50i home Last weekend. Yes - pretty crazy how capable it is. Still have a lot to learn about every piece of tech - but that's the fun part. It takes a full 3 months to really discover every nuance.

Agree - I started saving in my late teens and buying stocks at 21...now at 52 I feel I need to hide a nice car from coworkers...

work vehicle for client sites is always something practical and affordable.
when i would have to visit clients my firm would let me use their cars (Subaru Legacy & MB E-Class depending on the client) because they didn't want any of us showing up in our own cars.

I actually had a client just today say "nice car, you must be making too much money".

Meanwhile, his kid in his 20's is driving a Maserati and he is driving a Cayanne GTS. And the G Wagon AMG is literally just sitting in their parking lot for whenever they might need it.

I worry much less about the BMW though, even with these most recent comments. They do not have the same stigma as the RRS.

Funny enough, even a base V6 RRS at 65k stands out more and presents a different image than a totally hooked up X5 at nearly 90k.

At least in my mind it does. And I will continue to tell that to myself.

That's genius.

Why didn't I think about that?

Wow the nerve of some people to make rude comments like that.
