Cold start stalling, 35i

Hey all,
So I've been having this issue randomly where it would stall on cold start. Start it back up and its fine. It only does it when the engine is cold. Now it seems like it does it every cold start. Anyone else have this issue?

'14 x35i, 92k miles, stock.

Any codes? Have you done plugs and coils? How about carbon buildup, ever looked at the intake valves or had media blasting? Not the only things, but the usual first suspects. Also high pressure fuel pump..

I did the plugs about 25k miles ago. Coil's are original. I didnt think the carbon buildup on the n55 were as bad as the n54's from what read awhile back. The car doesn't struggle or take longer to start so I ruled out HPFP for now. I'll have to take a video on the next cold start.

At your mileage carbon buildup can be a thing on any DI motor, really. Depends upon how it is driven and maintained how bad, how soon. Does it shutter, etc. or just die?

If all is fine and it literally just dies, mass air flow sensor should be checked too.

low pressure fuel pump / filter ever been changed? Just throwing things out that can make it die after a start, but it would be easier to go down the list and rule things out.

What work has been done lately? I've heard transmissions with issues or needing adaptations run can do this. Lots a factors need to be eliminated first. I'd also be curious to look at the duty cycle of the fuel pump as well.

Not unusual. Ended up being a faulty injector in mine. Got it replaced and all has been fine since.

Quick update, took it to the dealer and they updated the software. Its been a few weeks and no stalls. Crossing fingers.

Did they give you any additional info on this? By software, I'm assuming they essentially refreshed everything?

Must be a temp solution. If it's a real issue then the issue will soon return. Do you think a weak battery can also be a factor?

I had exact same issue for almost a year...engine would stall out and die on various cold starts. Worst was when i was skiing and car would barely start or stay on. For a while the dealer said no problem, then i left it for days so they could reproduce the issue. Once they acknowledged the issue, dealer said software would fix problem, which sounded silly to me. But they did a software update and I've had zero issues and no stalling in about 8 months since.

I have extended warranty so they could have fixed anything and it would have been covered, so they had no incentive to not fix something if broken. I assumed I'd be back when the cold start idle shut down occurred again, but here i am, many months later and issue is gone. Ive been skiing a bunch since December and not one issue in the cold this winter.

Would it also sometimes just studder and not stall completely?

Ours did this for a few weeks then it just stopped doing it. I’ve never seen it stall tho. I was thinking either software or injectors.

Yes...sometimes shudder...sometimes stall. Mostly shuddering in beginning. Stalls happened more towards end (before fix), but it was also colder months at that time. Would've put money on something physical needing replacement, but software update fixed it. Only downside was i lost all my coding and had to spend time recoding everything.

I paid a diag fee at the dealer and they said that the software was too old and had to update the car first before they can diag any further. I guess after the update, they let the car sit for a few extra days and the car didn't stall. Paid a little under $600 and no stall so far.

If you're under warranty, they would cover the update but I'm out of warranty lol.

Start with a software update and go from there. Injector failure isn't uncommon at that mileage.
