Oil Consumption Test - Anyone Pass/Fail One?

I have recently taken my 2016 X5 50i in for an oil consumption test to understand if my engine is susceptible to excessive oil consumption, per the recent class action lawsuit mentioned a few times on this forum. For those just tuning in, search the forums and also check this isley website. In my experience with the car thus far, it's required about 2 quarts of oil in about 2K miles of driving.

Oil Consumption Test - How it Works
The test requires you to go to the BMW dealership, where they will replace the oil and measure (I assume very specifically) the amount of oil in the engine. They give you the vehicle back, ask you to drive it 750-800 miles (no more than 1000), and reschedule another appointment so they can re-measure the oil level. The test is free, per the lawsuit, if your vehicle is a part of it.

Test Questions
What's not clear to me is what would be defined as "in spec", per this lawsuit. I've taken my car to a BMW dealership for the oil consumption test, and while I wouldn't expect them to outright lie about the amount of oil consumed, per BMW, the "normal" amount of oil consumed can be rather high.

Additionally, does anyone know why type of driving conditions might consume more or less oil? I'm not trying to cheat the test, but my car definitely drinks oil, and if I 'just pass' the test, I'd be pretty disappointed that BMW isn't willing to fix the issue.

Finally, has anyone actually gone through the entire process, with a vehicle impacted by this lawsuit, and either had a result that required an engine repair (or replacement), or had an oil consumption test that did NOT find the car was consuming enough oil to qualify for a repair? I would like to know your experience.

If your N63TU consumes more than 1 liter in 1,000 miles (I assume they extrapolate the consumption to what would have been burned at 1k if you bring it back at a lower milage), the engine is deemed to have failed the test and eligible for the repair/replacement under Isley.

I took my '14 X5 back to the dealership on Thursday and they determined it had failed (I returned it at 930miles and dealer said it consumed 1.5 liters). I had intended to wait for the car, assuming that it would be a pretty cut and dry "yes/no" and that I would have to go on a wait list for a new short block, but it actually is a more complicated process involving quite a bit of testing.

Yesterday afternoon, so a full day later, my service rep let me know that they had completed all of the testing required by BMW NA and submitted the reports - now awaiting next steps/work authorization from corporate. I know they performed compression tests and analysis of various seals and gaskets - not sure what else.

I'm guessing the open question is, at BMW's discretion, do they authorize a rebuild attempt under warranty, or deem the block damaged and proceed to offer a pro-rated engine replacement per the Isley agreement. Will update when I know - hopefully Monday!

Thank you sar08011 for posting your experience! Please keep us posted, and I'll do the same. What type of driving do you do typically - short trips, long trips, city driving, highway, etc.?

Anyone else out there with a passed or failed oil consumption test that is attempting to get remediation through this Isley settlement?

Failed both the oil consumption and the compression test, so BMW will replace the engine at a pro rated cost per the Isley settlement …but, it’s still going to be a very hefty bill given I am in the 90k-100k miles bracket. Cost of the job before discount is ~$18k including tax. May check with one or two other dealers in area to compare cost - but I’ve generally found the one I am to be pretty transparent and fair.

I'm 600 miles into my oil consumption test and I'm already a quart low, per the computer - this is about the consumption level seen over the last 3 oil change intervals so at least its consistent - this sucks as I pushed my dealership on this for the last 20k miles before my BMW platinum warranty expired in mid Dec. and now I have 102k miles - this may be a one and done experiment into BMWs unfortunately

Can someone clarify the settlement for me.
If bmw proceeds with repair/rebuild instead of the replacement.
Is the costumer prorated for the cost of the repair?
Or does it only apply for engine replacement?

They can try repair but if fails the test it will be replaced.

Just got my 17 done. Did 1st test/measure. Then drive around 800-900 miles. I tried to do plenty of aggressive driving. Came back and I passed with 0.2L burned and within the spec of the settlement. So I’m happy I don’t have to deal with it.

Wow so basically the life on a BMW engine is 120K miles, anything above that is just living on the edge….interesting 🤔

Hate to say it, but that’s been the case most of the v8 engines save for the s65 and s62. As long as you replace the rod bearings on the s65.

We received the first low oil light yesterday. We bought the '18 CPO w/ 13k miles back in end of Dec '21 and just passed 16k. I pinged our dealership this morning for the consumption test.

I really just want to hang on to this thing till the LCI comes out next year.

I got it once and never again. Also 2018 50i CPO. I just keep a quart of oil in the trunk but only used it once in 13K miles. I do the usual 10K recommended oil change.

side note...
I'll add replacing the injectors before 120k miles (before they start leaking) can save you from having to buy a new engine too.

I did it during my last oil change just to see and yes, it passed easily since it was showing Max level at around 1000 miles after the oil change. I am now around 7K miles after that oil change and it is still "green' and hitting the max line. I keep checking the oil level when I remember to...
