How stable is your X6?

Hi,

I own 2007 E92 328i coupe. It's been almost 9 years and I'm looking for a new car. I'm thinking about either X5 or X6.

Only problem I have is that I no longer trust BMW cars, but I like it anyway lol

My 328i had so many issues so far. It had stopped on a stop sign three times. I had to tow it. I had other several engine issues and even BMW took a few try & fails to fix a single problem. Most of them were engine related issues (My paperworks are gone..no detail) After warranty expired, I also spent at least 3000 dollars so far and I actually have 'service engine soon' even now. I have to take it to a n indie shop this weekend. May be I didn't have luck..

I really want to purchase instead of leasing a car.

How is your X6 or X5 for those of you who had it more than 4 years?

Its going to be hard for people to answer questions about longer term reliability since this gen X5 has only been out for about 2 years

@littlehuman , based on the engine reliability, the N55 has been around since E9x LCI.
AFAIK, it is one of the best engine so far.
Ride quality wise, it depends on which options you are getting.
Also, a little reminder, if the car dealership couldn't fix your car for 3 consecutive visits or after 30 days, you can file the car as a lemon.
It doesn't matter how old the car is.

You also have to factor in that since the X5 is a more expensive vehicle to start compared to your 2007 328i the maintenance cost post warranty will likely run you more money. The drivetrain is more complex compared to your naturally aspirated inline 6. This is why i tend to only keep my cars for 3-4 years before i get something newer. From what i gathered from the E70 forums people either loved their X5 with very few issues or it was a total lemon.

not sure about other states, but car age is part of the equation in IL. Has to be first 12 months of ownership and <12k mi on the clock.

For the most part, few manufacturers these days have issues with engines, transmission, water pumps, power steering, etc. Most problems on the X5 and most higher performance cars are going to come from electronic sensors. These parts are often near heat, shortening their lives, and will trigger "check engine" lights or trip power output if they sense high emission discharge.

The alternative is lower performance, where fewer sensors are needed to manage emissions, and fewer options (multi-zone climate, massage chairs, active lights, night vision,.....) requiring electronics. The more comfort options and performance, the more things can fail. BMW is not unique to this problem.

If you are buying new, you will have a good warranty and service (including brakes) included for the first four years.
