Winter Tires advice

Hey guys... This will be my first set of dedicated winter tires as All-Seasons have always treated me well. I need run flats as Chicago potholes terrify me and being stranded with a 5 and 6 year old isn't enough to offset a ride quality that I can't honestly say I can differentiate.

Does anybody have recommendations between the two Pirellis:

WINTER CARVING EDGE RUN FLATStuddable Winter / Snow - set of four = $1224.00 after rebates

SCORPION ICE & SNOW RUN FLATLight Truck/SUV Performance Winter / Snow - set of four = $1368.00 after rebates

I live in Chicago and the streets aren't that bad at all. The plows get to them in a pretty timely manner and I park in a private garage... so no shoveling out of a spot.

I want to order them soon in the event TireRack has a run on winter tires being sold and they get put on backorder. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

Go Bears! Go Cubs!

Same question here, considering either Scorpion or Michelin Latitude X-Ice. But will opt out for run flat.

I've heard very good things on the Pirelli winter carving, no personal experience though.
From what I read, the studded version of winter tires makes the difference.

Do you have to put the metal studs in to make them effective? I'm not out driving around in Soviet Russia watching Rocky train outdoors. Lol.

LOL. No I meant the Pirelli winters are studded.

I'll grab the description in a bit, but I thought it said they're stud-able with metal studs. Also has a disclaimer to check local laws as they may be harmful to the street surface.

I see. My understanding is that certain winters are studded ( not the add-ons type). I'm not familiar with winters. Always used all seasons for winter setup with no issues. But then again I avoid driving when it snows because even though your car might be well equipped with snow tires but there is always other drivers out there that are not prepared and lose control and can hit you

Yeah I've got no choice. I coach my kids in winter basketball and they have swimming in the winter, too. Compound that on top of trips to/from school and I've got to be prepared.

Someone on E70 drove on both sets on the same car and wrote a post comparing these RFTs.
AFAIR, Pirelli Scorpions were better choice for city driving.
Carving Edge is probably a better choice when you live far from cities and have to drive a foot deep snow every day.

I was going to go non-RFT but I changed my mind based on the positive reviews. I just ordered 20" Pirelli Scorpion I&S Staggered RFT's. I just hope these RFTs aren't too hard of a ride. I just hate them for this reason.

Nope. Always had great success with All-Seasons.

Saw your post in the vossen classified ad. If I may offer my opinion, get 21" wheels of you need runflats. 22" wheels if you're going to run regular tires.

20" after market wheels usually look tiny compared stockers.

I've always had all seasons...this time was caught in the act...performance tires plus winter tires...
Will definitely switch back to all seasons on the next...not worth the time, money, dents & scratches you get every time you bring the car in,...

I plan on ordering the Scorpions myself. Given the percentage of winter driving on dry, albeit cold, roads, I figure a more performance oriented winter tire is the way to go.

I've had great experience with the performance winter blizzaks in the past, but they are not available in this size range.

I agree about the size, but I don't want to have to drop extra cash for new summer tires, too. I can offset it with a slight drop (which I can't believe I'm saying) for about half the price of new tires.

I have the Scorpions. Used them last winter and I was perfectly happy with them. Those other ones are designed for use with studs, which I have no use for. With the modern compounds used for winter tires, I will never use studded tires again.

Before you pull the plug, also look at Nokian tires. They make run flats as well as conventional....studded and not....retractable studs......I am not sure if anyone makes a better winter tire. I have a set of Hakkapeliita R2s on the R500 and it grips very well, is quiet, slow to wear, and very confidence building. If we take the X5 to the mountains more often, I will get a set of 18" wheels and the RFT version of the R2 or 8 series of their winter tire.

I am going with the Scorpions myself. I read the same review from the E70 guy who had the scorpions first then switched over to the carving edge and noticed a significant difference for the worst. Since I have dedicated summers I want a pure snow tire for that peace of mind on crappy days when i have my entire family in the car.

I would get Nokians but i don't think they make the correct size for the 20" 469M.
