Could you please confirm that Auto on/off defaults to last used mode - I was under impression that this function need to be programmed by BMW tech (all based on this link http://www.bmwblog.com/2012/08/13/bm...stop-settings/

Confirmed by 1) Per Delivery specialist 2) Every time I drive it is off. I have not changed it to be on. Now for my F25 it had to be programmed to last user mode, which was done with no charge. Any subsequent change is requested would not be free.

I have also tested mine again, and it does stay in your last used mode. Tuesday night I had auto start / stop off and the next morning it was still off when I started it up to go to work.

50i, and my first tank is only getting 250 miles. Complete gas guzzler, but totally worth it. Fun as all hell to drive!

EPA rating for 35d

Has the EPA rating been issued yet. I assume they can't sell any USA diesels until it is.

1,200 miles for the break-in.

It seems that you can have a pretty large range of MPG depending on how you drive. I am taking it a little easy at the start and getting 17+ mpg & 400+ miles per tank of gas. When I say, taking it easy, I mean just driving normal / keeping it under 4000 rpm not pushing it to see how fast it will go. I bet I could do even better in eco mode and trying to save some gas. On the other hand, it is going to be much worse in sport mode and having a bit of fun. I bet the range could be 8mpg to 22mpg, it just depends on how you drive.

Wow, that's really thirsty! On my X5 30d (E70) cruising at around 115 km/h (70 Mph), the onboard computer displays a range between 1150 and 1200 km (700 to 750 miles).

But of course is HALF as fun as the 50i

The 50i will drink an ocean of gas. An ocean.

I understand you're trying to make an informed decision etc but if MPG is even a remote concern, you cannot get the 50i. You'll be so horrified by the mpg you'll lose sleep. You'll also always be looking at the MPG estimator jumping back and forth while driving and might get into an accident because you're not watching the road. Funny how that little guy starts at 12 - what if you can't even get 12!!!

^ This is great ....

I briefly attempted to entertain the 35i - and even test drove one. It certainly wasn't bad - but of course then I drove the 50i - and that was the end of it.

I ordered the 50i.

For me not a big deal as I work 3 minutes from the house but I agree if you are even remotely concerned about gas mileage - run, don't walk - to the diesel or straight 6.

V8s are so 1999. Seriously though, the new breed of 6 cylinder motors are as good as V8s for daily use and are easy in the wallet. I truly feel that for the US where you can't eve drive fast, 200 hp is more than enough

Just got a 35i for my wife, and have had it for about 2 weeks. Avg mpg is only 16. Test drove a v8 yesterday. The power was great but felt the engine noise for daily use was intrusive. The car also seemed to lurch more with extra power. Truthfully, I was kind of bummed I did not like it more as I am considering getting an x5 50i for myself. I may instead get a fully optioned msport 35 - I actually really like the smoothness of the 6, feel that it is fast enough, and care more about handling rather then massive engine that is overly thirsty.

The 35i certainly was no slouch - it, or the diesel, is probably the logical choice for most folks .... for myself it was never not going to be the 50i mill.

That being said, if BMW sold the 4 liter 313 HP diesel or the 381 HP 5 liter diesel here in the States - I would certainly have chosen one of these.

Too bad we only get the 3 liter diesel in the US - which I find really annoying.

The 5 liter diesel has got to be an absolute blast to drive - probably exceeds the 50i:

"What the numbers don't convey is the M50d's acceleration, which is relentless. Leave your foot buried on the accelerator for any length of time and you'll be shoved firmly back in your seat as the car hurtles forwards at seriously illegal speeds."

+1

I'd have loved to have bought the M50d.

I would have bought 50d. In fact, IMO 50d > X5M. One of the first things I would do is de-badge a 50d.

I hope BMW is paying attention to this forum. I would order the M50d if it was available in the US. As it stands, like the rest of the diesel fans here I am waiting to order a 35d while the rest of the world gets supplied with diesels first.

Getting about 12.9 so far on my 50. Have 400 miles on. Driving half and half city and highway fairly hard but not beating it.

It's not the HP but the torque that translates into daily fun from the line. HP is for top speed ...

Doing 98.9875% city driving as I live and work in the city I can't be preoccupied with this MPG nonsense.

It's all about the noises for me. That visceral feeling when I hear the cold start and the growl that supplements talk radio is worth every penny of gas.

However, I do get a bit distraught sometimes when I give it a little go as I feel like it's drinking from one of those giant bubble tea straws...

Lol ... I respect the hordes of Prius drivers here in Southern California - but can't wait to roll by them in the 50i .. (Even as it drinks gallons of high test gas ..)
