EPA rating for 35d
Has the EPA rating been issued yet. I assume they can't sell any USA diesels until it is.

1,200 miles for the break-in.
It seems that you can have a pretty large range of MPG depending on how you drive. I am taking it a little easy at the start and getting 17+ mpg & 400+ miles per tank of gas. When I say, taking it easy, I mean just driving normal / keeping it under 4000 rpm not pushing it to see how fast it will go. I bet I could do even better in eco mode and trying to save some gas. On the other hand, it is going to be much worse in sport mode and having a bit of fun. I bet the range could be 8mpg to 22mpg, it just depends on how you drive. |

The 50i will drink an ocean of gas. An ocean.
I understand you're trying to make an informed decision etc but if MPG is even a remote concern, you cannot get the 50i. You'll be so horrified by the mpg you'll lose sleep. You'll also always be looking at the MPG estimator jumping back and forth while driving and might get into an accident because you're not watching the road. Funny how that little guy starts at 12 - what if you can't even get 12!!!

I briefly attempted to entertain the 35i - and even test drove one. It certainly wasn't bad - but of course then I drove the 50i - and that was the end of it. I ordered the 50i. For me not a big deal as I work 3 minutes from the house but I agree if you are even remotely concerned about gas mileage - run, don't walk - to the diesel or straight 6. |

V8s are so 1999. Seriously though, the new breed of 6 cylinder motors are as good as V8s for daily use and are easy in the wallet. I truly feel that for the US where you can't eve drive fast, 200 hp is more than enough

Just got a 35i for my wife, and have had it for about 2 weeks. Avg mpg is only 16. Test drove a v8 yesterday. The power was great but felt the engine noise for daily use was intrusive. The car also seemed to lurch more with extra power. Truthfully, I was kind of bummed I did not like it more as I am considering getting an x5 50i for myself. I may instead get a fully optioned msport 35 - I actually really like the smoothness of the 6, feel that it is fast enough, and care more about handling rather then massive engine that is overly thirsty.

The 35i certainly was no slouch - it, or the diesel, is probably the logical choice for most folks .... for myself it was never not going to be the 50i mill.
That being said, if BMW sold the 4 liter 313 HP diesel or the 381 HP 5 liter diesel here in the States - I would certainly have chosen one of these. Too bad we only get the 3 liter diesel in the US - which I find really annoying. The 5 liter diesel has got to be an absolute blast to drive - probably exceeds the 50i: "What the numbers don't convey is the M50d's acceleration, which is relentless. Leave your foot buried on the accelerator for any length of time and you'll be shoved firmly back in your seat as the car hurtles forwards at seriously illegal speeds." I hope BMW is paying attention to this forum. I would order the M50d if it was available in the US. As it stands, like the rest of the diesel fans here I am waiting to order a 35d while the rest of the world gets supplied with diesels first.

Getting about 12.9 so far on my 50. Have 400 miles on. Driving half and half city and highway fairly hard but not beating it.

It's not the HP but the torque that translates into daily fun from the line. HP is for top speed ...

Doing 98.9875% city driving as I live and work in the city I can't be preoccupied with this MPG nonsense.
It's all about the noises for me. That visceral feeling when I hear the cold start and the growl that supplements talk radio is worth every penny of gas. However, I do get a bit distraught sometimes when I give it a little go as I feel like it's drinking from one of those giant bubble tea straws...
