Using a Diesel X5 in Canada, anything I should be aware of?
Using a Diesel X5 in Canada, anything I should be aware of?
I am looking to trade in my 2008 X5 3.0si for either a 2015 35d or 2016 35i. Never had a diesel before and was wondering how well they do in Toronto, Canada maintenance wise etc. especially in the winter as it gets very cold here (at least for me!) Also is there anything I should be aware of. Been reading up a lot online and on this forum which is fantastic. Historically I have driven around 15k km a year city and highway but starting within about 12 months or so may double that as I may have to travel more for work (another office much further out). Right now in Toronto diesel at the pumps is comparable in price to regular gas but about 15% cheaper than premium so if I eventually drive 30k km a year I could save around $3k in gas a year. I was looking at one of the following based on the website and am going to a dealer next week. Any thoughts and opinions appreciated. Thanks in advance. 2016 35i * Dark Graphite Metallic * Packages 1. 3rd Row Seating ($2,100) 2. Premium Package Enhanced ($6,500) * Options 1. Aluminium Running Boards ($800) 2. Convenience Telephone w/ext smartphone connectivity ($600) Diesel 2015 35d * Dark Graphite Metallic * Packages 1. 3rd Row Seating ($2,100) 2. Premium Package ($4,900) 3. BMW Connected Drive Services ($500) 4. Driver Assistant ($1,500) * Options 1. Aluminium Running Boards ($800) 2. Convenience Telephone w/ext smartphone connectivity ($600) |

Diesel is going through weird transformation here in Canada that no one is certain what's happening...
Follow the threads and you'll see... If you're leasing, 2015 or 2016 won't matter I suppose... Government has halted all 2016 diesels indefinitely until further notice, due to VW scandal...could be something big waiting to unfold...or maybe nothing. Having said all this, diesel is certainly the way to go...I had a 2014 F15 Diesel recently sold and ordered a 2016 before all this fiasco..they cancelled all 2016 diesels and offered either 2015 tag or 2016 35i...I didn't accept a 2015 as I'm owning and didn't want a 2015 in the month of Dec! now there's a 2016 35i at the dealership waiting for me...not sure if I'll go for it as the diesel is rumored to be released again soon (still not clear when) and it is still my preference... I've asked them for more incentive On the 35i f they agree...I might pick it up... If not I will either wait for diesel or see when 40e PHEV is coming... Diesel also has a much better resell value ( if you are owning it)... Also monster torque compared to gas... If you are leasing definitely go with diesel (2015)... Diesel will save you money in gas and in my option thats worth a lot especially when you drive a lot and plan on keeping the vehicle years + more fun (in my opinion)... Just FYI I get 35MPG on the highway with the 35d . |

keep in mind, diesels take longer to warm up than a gas engine. and its worse in cold climates. though, i'm not sure what bmw does to their diesels to aid in cold weather.

It is about depreciation.... If you're buying, you wouldn't want 2015 in the month of December.2015...your car automatically depreciates...let alone becomes a year old after 25 days! there are no incentives when you someday decide to sell it...your vehicle will be on the "1-year-older-category" compared to 2016...end of story...as a person buying a $100k vehicle that's enough to make a decision.... If you do get a better offer on a 2015 then a 2016 (you get a diesel)...and plan on keeping your vehicle for like he said almost 10 years; 2015 or 2016 there is not a lot of difference in reselling unless its a different generation...which it is NOT! Actually if somebody in 10 years is looking for a car ,most-likely will go with the vehicle that has been taken care of better. Not if its built 2015 or 2016 (especially since its the same generation! And like I said its my opinion. |

But I'm surprised you don't see the price difference...shop for a 2014 vs 2015 and you'll see the price difference... |

I've logged 59k on my '14 35d, have had some issues (not only pertaining directly to the diesel powerplant). I typically drive between 35-40k a year...the diesel was an easy choice for me based on the fuel consumption.

Thanks everybody. Ended up with the 35i on order as no 2015 diesel left and no longer taking 2015 diesel orders. Did not / could not wait for however long it may be for them to start taking diesel. They told me also there is quite a backlog in Toronto for diesel so may be a fairly long wait after the orders start up again.

10+ years...
I was questioning on another thread about keeping a X5 for a long time...
You really think you can do 10+ years with a 35d? I took the 7/200k extended on mine to give me a chance. I plan to keep it more than that but... I'm still wondering... Comments? |

There is also a 2016 35i that I had ordered previously and is at the dealership...in case you were interested. It's got all the things you have listed above and more... |

Thanks, I saw that and your new diesel build, they look great but probably more than I can spend right now (I also added the M Power Performance Package).
They took my trade in already and I have been driving a loaner until my 35i is delivered. I will just take the 35i and maybe after 5 years get a hybrid or whatever else that have by then! |
