Spotted a unicorn in WV X5 M50d...or is it?

I was extremely excited to see something I didn't think they sold here in the states. I was wondering what sort of workaround the owner used to get this awesome car here. Then I started doing some digging and it looks like the tailpipes are incorrect, so I'm guessing this is just an X5 35d? As I remarked to my buddy, there's only about 5 people in the entire state that would be impressed by such an oddity, and all 5 would be able to figure out this fuckery.

So I ask the experts on here (I'm an MB guy), is this legit or is it a fake? Would love for it to be real.

I'm not an expert with the packages and all, especially with the m50d but I don't think this is an authentic m50d. I'm pretty sure that all m50d came with the m-sport package and that rear bumper isn't. Also, that m50d logo is about a half inch or so too far to the right.

Maybe he upgraded the motor.. but definitely not the body. Definitely comes with the MSport Package.

Look at the brakes. I have ironically upgraded mine to the M50d, so one could theoretically have done that, but my guess is he has the stock 35i brakes. That would be a dead giveaway. Edit: Also, the M50d would've come with the same aero kit as the M-Sport + the front inlet splitters.

It's fake.

Just another poser with an ///M badge on a non-M vehicle.

Ironically, even the M50d is a non-M vehicle.

Unfortunately you didn’t spot a unicorn…you spotted a poseur (aka fake).

…wrong tail pipes and rear bumper:

Well I'm super disappointed as I thought there might be a way to legally obtain one of these (would prefer one in the F10 instead).

That being said, can you elaborate on what you did to convert yours? I'm assuming they're all the same 3.0 inline 6 block, but I can't image the amount of effort and money required to add a third turbo and all of the necessary plumbing/cooling and ECU changes?

Assuming they're a diesel nerd as am I (DPF/EGR deleted and tuned OM642 W211 driver as part of my stable plus a former W126 300SD), you'd think they'd understand that the only people that would be impressed would also be able to spot a fake. It's like the fake AMG/M badge crew...the only people that care are the only people that can spot it's a fake... does not make any sense.

My current DD is a tuned W212 E400 that is completely debadged.. that seems like the more fun option.

Right? F15 35D here myself. The only people who would understand an m50d are the exact people who are going to know its fake....no one wins here

I love how he doubled down on his fakeness by purchasing a personalized plate featuring "M Diezel".

He couldn't even spell diesel correctly!

Well, to be fair, I think it's a pretty clever plate. I'm guessing someone else who has a 335d or 535d already had the proper spelling. I'm hopeful the owner is on these forums and comes back to explain how this thing is actually legit. I really really really want it to be legit, because I want one or at least the option of building one.

Sorry if I was unclear - I didn't retrofit the M50d motor etc., just the brakes (i.e. calipers, rotors, shields etc.). I imagine though there aren't many if any in NA who have done that, so I was saying to the OP that if they didn't have the M50d brakes it would be a pretty reliable indicator that it wasn't one. Then again, after I looked at the picture again, they didn't even have the M-Sport aero kit which is a dead giveaway.

By letter alignment and spacing alone you can tell this is fake. So sad. If you want power just flash tune the car and enjoy the ride. Stupid.

I know from experience that a modern CRD with deleted DPF and EGR are already a monster and the BMW versions can give a non tuned 35i or even some Ms a run for their money. It's more fun to leave others confused about what just happened than to think they kept up with a fake M/AMG

Even the badging on the real one pictured above is awful, way too much going on there IMO.
