Horn delay?
I just came back from Ultimate Driving Event and almost all F line had horn delay. I usually just tap the horn to communicate, I noticed there is an annoying delay, is this the case with everyone?

Yes, seems like the BMW horn has to go through the DME with a CPU speed of an Pentium I.

I wonder if we can bypass that and wire our own $50 horn which would give us instant honk? But if the delay is actually sending the signal to the horn, then I don't think we can bypass that. It's really annoying.

Maybe they want us F15 drivers to display more good manners on the roads, so they wire in a delay. There's always the frantic-high-beam-flashing-in-anger substitute if the horn delay irks you

It's the most annoying thing in my X5. I had the same problem in my F25 X3. Now that you mention it, I wish they'd fix this!

Once again, I am reminded why I am thankful I don't live in a big city. Until I saw this, I haven't even thought about the horn. Haven't used it yet.

What would you do if high beams had a delay? It's like you flash once and there is a delay. Maybe it does.. Better check it.

New York City.. Not as bad as some towns in India in terms of honk-craze (from the video's I've seen) but don't you ever have to wave someone, or don't you have hot ladies waving "HONK IF YOU SUPPORT THEM HUCKABEES" signs at certain intersections up there?

@opasha & @r33, do you guys think this is something we can remove (or improve) by coding? I just don't see the point of this, seriously. I keep forgetting that there is a delay and then I hit it again and end up honking twice. I can't believe I am the only one who is this much bothered by this.

Sorry to hear that, I have a solution, installing an aftermarket air horn with an aux switch. I wonder if they make wireless horn switches, that would be the ultimate clean install.

Yeah, that seems to be the only way. I saw PIAA super horns and sparco buttons that go around the steering wheel center to come up behind the wheel kind of like where the paddle shifters are. Not a very clean setup, though. I think stuff like this takes away from the quality of the car, unfortunately. I really wish there was some coding we could do/find. It doesn't seem like enough people have figured out anything with bmw horns to write online about it.

I took it to the service and addressed the issue, they said there's nothing wrong with the horn so i'm guessing it's a wire thing like the guys mentioned above.

That's what it seems like. It's kind of like the delay in our acceleration through the pedal...the signal that bounces over to let the car know to apply gas takes a second longer than what we want (rectified with a tune chip or sprintbooster pedal). It seems the horn does the same thing...the signal being delayed (definitely a software thing so I'm surprised no one has knowledge of where to find this). From all of my coding reading, I have found reduction in delays for our headlights, interior lights, windows/moon roof, etc, but nothing for HORN .

I am guessing if you by pass the controller and wire the horn directly it will produce an error somewhere. There is really no reason for a horn signal to be processed with a (slow) CPU. Now if the volume increased with speed, I would say it is fine.
In the olden days autobahn drivers used to install small but very loud air horns -they could be heard at high speeds- with a under dash switch to engage them for high speed driving. |

I'm wanting to install a horn along the lines of what the railroads use on their locomotives. Would be quite useful with all of the old deaf head-bangers wheeling their lux-o-barges around where I live.
We take delivery of our F15 at the PC in the morning. I'll make a point of hitting it and questioning why the delay. Be interesting what the response is. Update: Mentioned the delay during our delivery experience on 11/5. Received no acknowledgement that there is a problem. Last edited by F15GorDe; 12-15-2014 at 01:47 PM.. Reason: Update |
