DEF for diesel owners
I am headed to FL in a couple of days and my service alert says 3700 miles until service required. So while I was at the parts store, I bought a gallon of Valvoline DEF to top off the tank. Well, it must be a big damn tank, as it took the gallon easily and I should have 3700 miles of driving left. I called the dealer, and they said the BMW service bulletins state the DEF can be used much faster or slower than the 10,000 mile interval depending on a lot of factors. Cold weather and driving with a heavy foot can contribute. I didn't ask if a chip would affect the consumption, but I would bet it does.

I seem to remember a thread on here quoting the DEF tank at about 13 litres or so, certainly on UK spec vehicles. Here in the UK they reckon you get about 9000 miles per tank of DEF. The usage rate will be pretty dependent on how you drive it, I would think a chip would increase usage as the rate of use is proportional to the rate of fuel consumption. Burn more fuel, create more exhaust gases, need more DEF to neutralise the NOx.

I'm seeing many truck stops advertising DEF now in PA/NJ. Is it a pumping system, or bottles? And if pump, is the connector able to be attached to our BMW's? I have not stopped to ask, but was wondering.

From what I have read on here you can use the DEF/AdBlue pumps as the nozzle fits okay. Just watch the fill rate, the pumps are designed for filling truck DEF tanks which will be much bigger that those on the F15 and that stuff stinks not to mention its corrosive.

The pump DEF is for full size trucks with DEF tanks holding 30+ gallons. I think a gallon of the Valvoline DEF cost me $10 and will probably last me maybe, 7000 miles. The DEF tank in the engine compartment has too small of a filler neck to use a commercial pump. And yes, very corrosive, but diluted quickly with water. Don't get it on painted surfaces...

diesel exhaust fluid
I am now 16,000 miles past my last free dealer service and am still waiting for my 35d to ask for def. Most of my miles are highway, maybe that's why?

What stops you to add DEF ? Or you want to get this message in unconviniet time and place ??? Low level gives you more trouble in the future .

Is 3700 miles to service a known time to refill? i’ve only had my X5 for a couple months and put a few k miles on it so i was assuming the dealer had refilled

DEF on our Super Duty 1-ton trucks, tanks are 10 gallons, uses much more when driving hard or towing one of our gooseneck trailers.
DEF on our big rigs are 20 gallon tanks, at 10MPG the DEF goes pretty quick. Both the standard pickups and our big rigs can use the gas station fillers (the pump's nozzles are smaller than a standard gasoline nozzle). The best part is our 2017 Kenworth has 9,000 miles on it now...already been in the shop twice, once to replace EGR, once to fix DEF system modules & sensors. Thanks EPA!
