I drive the B58 for a month and loved it. Too bad bmw chose to put a tiny cooler on the transmission. It gets hot starts shifting funny then you loose power, etc etc. The camera system went out too sll within three week I had it. Smh I’m over it I went and drove a Biturbo AMG 6.3 S and man let me tell you blows the M X6 out of the water interior wise and performance. It’s the one that looks like ours but no crazy issues I’ll be looking to buy one soon

it's just a quick clip showing how much it can be rattled with your fingers. it's quite excessive despite there being enough tension on it.

Any updates on the wastegate play? What I don’t understand is why is it only under load and varies with rpm. When you do a stationary rev in N the noise is never there. It’s only after a load is introduced.

Had to register and post that my MY15 F15 is experiencing the same issue.

I know people may not believe it, but it sure sounds like the engine is pinging to me.

For those of us experiencing the issue, has anybody tried using a different oil, higher octane (94 AKI?), or are tuned?

EDIT: I just did some data logging with BimmerLink, and the sound correlates directly with the "Condition for detected knockers" events. Can someone else experiencing the issue use BimmerLink and confirm my findings?

I tried both 91 and 93 octane fuels, but noticed no difference in the knocking. However, last week I filled the tank with 91 E5 gas, and the knocking noise was significantly quieter. It was still present, but barely audible compared to the previous week. Not sure if these things are related, just wanted to share my thoughts...
The engine got Stage1 last October, I thought the noise has gone completely, but it's back a month ago. To be honest, the noise tends to disappear every winter and reappear every spring.

Regarding the oil: I always use LiquiMoly Molygen 5w40. Have driven approximately 60,000 miles on two cars with the N55 engine without encountering any issues.
Someone here mentioned that adding oil additives helped eliminate that noise, so I've already bought a bottle of LM CeraTec. Will use it during the next oil change (in approximately a month) and inform you if anything has changed.

So, I did a few runs under various conditions (city and highway, different speeds and accelerations), and no knocking events occurred at all. The noise was present when the engine warmed up enough (>100 C).

Thanks.

I'll do a bit more logging again today or tomorrow.

Only occurs for me when the engine is warm, between 1500-2500 RPM, and can only be heard with the window open.

Strangely doesn't occur in 1st or reverse.

Spending a bunch more time today, the knock condition and noise only occurs when I lug the engine in a high gear, low RPM, which is expected, though I can make the noise occur in any gear but first, and while accelerating normally between 1500-2000 RPM, not lugging.

I recorded a clip beside a cement retaining wall where you can hear it very clearly.

Let's hope we hear back from EnzoCali.. fingers crossed this is just wastegate rattle.

Bomzara josh16162 Same or very similar rattle on my 2015 x35i 80k miles: more pronounced during hot months, only audible with windows down or driving next to a wall

I was dealing with the same issue and it turned out to be a bad cv axle. You would never have known by looking at it though. I was changing the wheel bearing, because I thought that was the issue, and the axle just fell apart when I was removing it.

But this would have been a rhythmic ticking not associated with throttle?

Sorry, you're wrong - many people with RWD only (sDrive) cars do have that noise.

Valid point. It was rhythmic though. Like a metallic clicking noise only between 2k-3k rpm under load.

Great video, it’s amazing this can’t be isolated after all this time and that bmw told me this is a normal operating noise

I am not sure how much reduction you saw but if it's in like 30% range that would kind of make sense. If it was reduced like 80% then it could be engine-internal.
i am curious to do something about the wastegate first to see if that makes a serious dent in the noise issue. technically, it should practically go away.
if i manage to dampen it really well and the noise is still heavily present then might as well say F-IT and sell the car. I am definitely not chasing this inside the engine. it's simply not worth it for a 2014.
i'd drive it for a bit longer and then look into getting a B58.
My new N55 engine arrived at BMW of Louisville yesterday. They did an oil analysis and found metal particulates in it. So the whole engine is getting replaced. If you have a warranty and this noise take it to them and they’ll replace the engine. The Lexington dealership gave me the same ol normal noise bs. These guys didn’t.

Not sure if the engine replacement will work.. others in this thread have had it done with no change.

Guys… it’s the turbo waste gate…
I have pulled my dp off and found it rattles. I added springs from the waste gate arm to frame (applied slight pressure) and my rattle is gone and has been for a year.

Noise on acceleration

Hello,
I am a little late to this I know but I am new to the BMW world. I have a 2018 X5 35i xdrive that is making the same sound. Only noticed after it was in for a oil change at the dealer. Took it back they are saying its the transfer case and want to do a fluid change with additive. I am not convinced. I can also hear the noise when reversing up my driveway but its very minor then.
Has any 100% solution been found this noise? Its driving me crazy. X5 has 115km on it and drives fine.
