First off, sorry if this is in the wrong place (maybe I should have started the thread on the X5 board?), but considering I spend most of my time over at e90/f80post I'll leave this here unless a mod thinks it should be moved.
About the time I received my F80 M3 back east, my mom's lease on her Merc E550 4-MATIC expired and I finally turned her to the dark (or light?) side and she picked up a new '15 X5 Xdrive 3.5i So, this is just a mini review from the eyes of a younger person who daily drives an M3 sedan (coming from a 335is coupe) and getting into the X5. SPECS: X5 Xdrive 3.5i (no line) Alpine White/Canberra Beige Dakota Leather Premium Package Driver Assistance Package STYLING and COMFORT LOVE IT! I think the X5 is gorgeous to look at. I think the new X5 is one of the best looking SUVs on the road. I would definitely take it over the ML/GL Mercedes, the Range Rover Sport, and even a base Porsche Cayenne. The only downside on this particular car is the wheels, but that can be correct with the Msport line or a wheel option. The interior is where it's at though. This car is definitely comfortable, and you do sit high up as with any SUV. But, the car is more comfortable than the E550 it is replacing. Very smooth riding car, even in sport mode. PERFORMANCE Obviously I am going to be a bit jaded having an M3 as a daily, but I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of the N55 (I assume the 3.5i version has the same 300hp/300tq twin scroll I6 as the current 335i/435i/etc). The exhaust has a nice grunt and pops on upshifts. The 8-speed auto is smooth and comfortable. Fast on upshits, not as responsive on downshifts... but this isn't a sports car, so I didn't expect it to be nearly as snappy as the DCT in my M. Again, definitely surprised for the better! The car is torquey and pulls on the low end, but does loose a bit above 40/50mph as expected by the lower hp and the WEIGHT! STEERING/HANDLING For an SUV, the car handled very well! But the steering was a huge disappointment. There is absolutely no feel with the electronic steering. The car felt very Mercedesish with respect to road and steering feel. And it isn't like the electronic steering can't be made better, the three modes for steering in the F80 M3 are wonderful. The sport+ mode even feels even heavier and more directed than my outgoing 335is with the hydraulic steering (if I were tired in the morning and still half asleep, I would really need to muscle the steering wheel in that car. Great wake up call) XDRIVE Can't really comment since I haven't used the car in the snow, or off-road, but I'm sure it's great. MPG Also can't really comment. My mom drives the car in D all the time and in comfort setting (not eco-pro), but the car gets good mpg. When I drive using tip-tronic, probably not as good... TECHNOLOGY I do NOT have the HUD in my M3, and I was really surprised by it. I thought it would be more in-your-face. I really like it, but I don't regret not shelling out $4k just for the HUD in the M3. I find myself barely looking at the HUD when it is just displaying my speed. It's really nice when using the iDrive for navigation and when the car needs to alert me of something. Not intrusive at all, very cool feature! Other tech/iDrive is just like any other newer BMW so not really much to post about there. Overall, I really like the car. It's definitely slower on the top end and not as responsive as the 335is was or my M3, but I could never expect it to be. It pulls well for a daily driver and is extremely comfortable. Looks great as well! Let me know if I missed anything, or if you have any questions about the particular car!
