just drove from LA to San Francisco and back to LA. the steering is very sensitive and I felt like on some roads, it felt very solid and on some roads it does feel like it's somewhat wobbly on the highway, especially when it's windy. but yea, I have to agree that high speed stability on this car is not that great compared to other cars I've driven before. most of it definitely has to do with electric steering, on center feel is very vague and disconnected but you get somewhat used to it over time.

Do I understand you correctly that at 55 MPH feg you can take your hands of the steering wheel and it continues in a straight line? Every X5 I have driven are not that stable and if I do that the car immediately needs a corrective movement? You are not experiencing this???

No. I feel that way, too. If there's almost no wind and I use eco pro it's pretty much completely stable. Otherwise I call it a little darty. Dance around a little is a good way to put it too.

What I was thinking, does the X5M have similar issues with its modified aerodynamics. But there also it seems some people are more sensitive to this than others. SO far I have not driven or seen a X5 that you can take your hands of the steering wheel for several seconds without making a correction like my previous cars, the recently departed Audi Q5, Porsches and current BMW i8. Its not like it is unstable, but I tend to drive 100% of the time with both hands planted firmly on the steering wheel, which tends to be tiring after several hundred km of driving. Holding one hand on the steering wheel doesnt feel comfortable. |

Feel the "dancing" too, but have gotten used to it.
Coming from a Volvo before jumping to the X5, I was used to (possibly the most) super-stable car brand available. So in the beginning, the X5 felt a little bit too "nervous" for me to relax and enjoy, but as I have gotten to know the car - I now also know that the car is equally fast to correct "back on track". However - it demands some more attention to those small steering wheel movements. It's a little bit more "unstable" than I 100% optimally would prefer, but still good. But it would be interesting to know what would be the ultimate tire brand/type/size + suspension options etc. that would eliminate this "dancing" as much as possible, yet keeping the car's excellent handling/feel. Just came back from a 400 mile trip, 55mph to 95mph and dead solid (handling and ride) with standard suspension, and 33mpg-ish. This on the Dunlop run flats.

No dancing here at all.
Drove all day today from Toronto ON to Buffalo NY to Niagara Falls NY and back to Toronto ON - my wife and daughter wanted to explore Waldon Galleria and Fashion Outlets. The weather was crazy and it rained non-stop from about 11am when we crossed into USA. With all kind of speeds and driving conditions far from ideal our X5d M-Sport on 20" style 469 M rims with Dunlop performance RFTs handled amazing. |

Dang thing "dances around" at most speeds. Worst steering of any BMW I've owned and that is six of them. Hech I just had a Chevy Cruz rental car than steered better 😔

I got to drive the 320i all day as a loaner car when my X5 was in service and it drove great! steering was nicely weighted and very direct, almost felt like hydraulic steering, does 320i have electric steering? but man, this thing felt so underpowered lol.
