X5 N57 F15
Hello,
I have a 2014 X5 35D and I have an error code that is driving me nuts. It says coolant warm up time exceeded. When I pull the code. I used the hidden codes to check them temps. And the temps rise slow and steady for about 8-10 minutes before hitting upper 80's. If I'm at a light the temp drops 1-2 degrees cause the engine is not running. Insta said plausible change over valve for the EGR cooler. I checked it, and it's fine, clicking of the valve when I start did the test, voltage to the unit, etc. (I did change the valve anyway... and got the same error...) hate throwing parts at a problem! I changed out the AGR (first EGR off the exhaust ) manifold 6 months ago because the vacuum valve arm weld broke. One other thing I noted was that while driving home in the highway the coolant temp hit 98 deg C, and I don't think it was in a regen.. it was in the 60's outside too... thought that was a bit higher then expected. Any ideas??? Car has 99K miles on it. 2 injectors have been changed, and the AGR... since 50K miles. |

Bring it to dealer, had similar issues after EGR recall was done. This is covered by the EGR extended warranty. Probably one of your EGR coolers are leaking or bad valve.

I took it 6 months back and the EGR was checked and it was fine. It had the same code, they said it was that first EGR cooler issue, but it was not covered since the EGR was not leaking coolant. (Weld at the bypass flap broke, outside of the cooler)
So I changed the First EGR cooler my self, code went away for 6 months and are back again... I don't see any drop in coolant fluid so I don't think it is leaking, I think they extended the warranty to 10 years 120k miles... right? |

Yes sounds about right, mine was all covered by it, they even replaced the radiator as a goodwill option. I am in California so emissions are big deal here.

I was searching the engine bay for anything that I could point to, and the only thing I found was a cracked rubber hose from near the oil cap to the plastic intake tubing. (The rubber hose is a breather hose for oil vapers back into the intake.). My rubber hose has a built in heater with a connector, I could not find the part number for the life of me, there is a cheaper hose bmw sells but it is does not have a heater... I duct taped it for now...
All I could think of is it would cause a vacuum leak, and possible cause the car to run lean, idle rough... Running lean does reduce combustion temps, but I don't think it would be enough to cause the car to warm up detectably slower... |

Both EGR valve and cooler are covered by this recall, my original one was fine but replacement was leaking:

Temps a little high?
Today while driving home, the temp outside was 66 F and this is what the coolant temp was... a little higher, right? Hoping more error codes pop up showing it's the EGR cooler, then I'll take it in!

Yes, the values shown are normal.
I’ve seen outside temps +/- 20 degrees of 66 ambient with the same oil/coolant temps. Means your coolant systems are working normally.

Ended up being the vacuum line from the first EGR cooler to the vacuum valve solenoid. I should have replaced the vacuum lines when I replaced the EGR, the plug at EGR no long fit snug. I got a tip to check the vacuum lines, if you ever unplug it, you better replace it.

So this code popped up again. It’s driving me crazy. Looks like the EGR vacuum solenoid is bad. I did a quick check and it is failed open.
https://youtu.be/seYZMNx1tk4 There are 2 EGR vacuum solenoids, I’m changing the one in the front first. I’ll check the other one too. They are about $25 a pop for the peirburg. (It did turn the check engine light.) I just had the recall done and I guess this part is not part of the recall. I’m surprised more people have not had this issue…. This is the top check engine code I get! |

I just started getting this exact error. From all the reading I’ve done, I’m thinking it’s the coolant changeover valve (part number 2). It’s buried behind the air filter housing. Like you said, it’s an insta-code that is persistent. Although if I unplug the the aux water pump on the drivers side fender well, it’s seems to go away 🤷

Doubt it’s the valve. Check the vacuum hoses from behind the intake to the vacuum solenoid to the EGR flaps. If any of the vacuum hoses pulls right off it’s bad. It be nice to perform a vacuum leak check but that requires lots of tools

Maybe, but it might not be a good thing to do long term. I changed all my damn hoses on my old e70 35d (that was fun) used the over priced red blue and yellow vacuum hoses too! I just got this 90k mile f15 35d and it’s already blown the coolant its pipe (and coincidentally this egr coolant temp thing began too).
My other f15 35d has 160k and was nearly probed free. I’ll check on the vacuum hoses, as things are kinda crispy under the hood. Did you ever resolve your issue? |

If you changed the coolant pipe then you had to take the intake off, the vacuum hose sits under the intake and can get pinched. Check to see the hose didn’t get pinched. It actually happened to me.
On the coolant pipe I’d make that a 100K or 5 years replacement. A lot of people have had that fail. I wonder if an aftermarket aluminum pipe will come out |

uplugging the aux pump didn't work
Think everything was warmed up when I was looking under the hood for things.. Intake wasn't removed to replace that plastic water inlet
The leak started and drained the expansion tank a few times Only after the leak appeared did I get any egr coolant temp codes was hoping the lack of coolant was causing the CEL. I've bled the cooling system a couple of times I've replaced the changeover solenoid atop the egr cooler I will check the vacuum hoses when I get a chance (not looking forward to that). If I can't fix it, it's going to the dealer - the EGR was replaced about 5k miles ago..sooooooo. we'll see. |

Ok I think it’s fixed that damn coolant changeover valve. It’s not a difficult job as you can leave the bottom hose attached to it’s fitting (that is hard to get to).
Undo the two at the top (above the alternator), remove the three 10mm bolts, unhook the plug, destroy the single use hose clamps and remove the old valve. Now you have to move the brackets to the new valve. Find some properly sized hose clamps. Put it all back together and top up your expansion tank reservoir. Now my temp between the coolant and post egr cooler temp are very close together within 3-6 degrees of each other. Don’t bother trying to rebuild your valve, there isn’t a kit available. To me it looks as though the center rod inside simply won’t unscrew from the bottom metal disc. Here is the part number 11538572508 Search around for the best price on Google! |
