Agreed. 20 years ago, parents had more time to give to there kids. Now most of them dont have time because of work work and work. Thats why so many kids end up with drugs and all other stuff.

Here my two cents, more accurate my dad's, who never finished high school and was obvious more knowledgable than my teachers.

I tell this story all the time to show how educators priority are screwed up.

My parents got called into school because of my behavior in class, I was in 5th grade. The teacher told my parents I was disturbing the class and my classmates. They said I talked all the time and they could not get me to stop.

My dad asked, how was I doing and my grades.

They said my grades were great and was doing well.

My dad next question was, the kids I was talking to how were their grades.

The teachers answers was something like well they are not doing as well as me.

My dad simply said shouldn't they be having this conversation with those kids and their parents since they are not doing so well. Maybe if those kids didn't talk to me, then I would not be disturbing the class and they would be doing better in school.

He also said stop making other people's problems his, he got up and walked out and said to me keep doing what you're doing since I was doing so well.

I don't have kids, but I know what you are talking about.

Society is going downhill quickly.

I was just out with my dog and these people kept getting upset because he was making all these noises and barking! He's a dog for crying out loud people. He doesn't know context of the situations in that he should be quiet inside of a restaurant.

Just let dogs be dogs!

Never taught a day of school but thinks he is more qualified than a professional teacher on what goes on in a classroom. Your dad sounds like a great guy.

^ Yeah, I didn't get the moral of that story either. Sounded to me like it was okay for your kid to be disruptive in class so long as your kid is getting good grades? And that it was the other kids' fault for not doing as well despite your kid being a disruptive influence in class? That's pretty messed up, if you ask me.

Funny you posted this, was out walking our dog this morning. The dog never bothers anyone. We are walking down the path and a woman was coming towards us, did not say hello or good morning just started waving her hands to get the dog away from her, at this moment our dog was no where near her, the wife and I were between her and the dog. It was no like she could not move away, but she want us to move out of her way.

Actually, the reason I was talking, I was bored and eventually the school figured that out and got me involved in other things to keep me busy and engaged.

The moral of the story, it was easier for the schools to complain to my parents than do their job which was to teach. Also they felt they could pressure my parents since they cared, and the other kids parents could care less. So it was their issue not mine.

I got it. Sounded like the "professional teacher" was only looking at the surface issue instead of addressing the root cause and your dad put them in their place. Also sounds like it worked as they addressed the issue and everyone was for the better. To many schools just warehouse kids these days. Not enough spend time looking at the kid as individuals. And then Americans complain our schooling is poor and throw more money at it or set up standardized tests in the same way of not addressing the issue. Then they wonder why we spend 3 times as much but keep dropping educationally. I've been going through this with our kid in public schools. As a gradeschooler different years, different teachers, showed how some were excellent and some subpar. Tenure and the unions are the main culprits. Now he's in a private school and its night and day for much lower net cost.

So basically me when I was 14/15.

My mother sent me to live with my Father in Nebraska which was like prison. My relationship was never the same with my parents(both sides) ever again. I know they both thought they were doing what was best, but it was not.

I hope the fruits of your actions will not come back to bite you in the ass. Also why a Canadian military school if you live in Florida? There are plenty of good US academies. Also, last time I checked, no one is scared of the Canadian military.

If I was sent to something like a Military Academy at that age I think I would have done something VERY drastic and damaging...to many people.

edit: How can private school be less costly?

Oh come on, i love the story and i want to be that parent and in twenty years if you ask me, i was that parent. Give us parents the silver dust of time. I already tell everyone how epic my response was when i had to fetch mine from the principals office for standing up for civil rights (for being a dick) and i kindly informed the headmaster that i feel like the topic needs to be covered, not the immediate action.

The kid was grounded for a week and got banned from everything remotely fun for two weeks. That won't get out since i won't ever admit my perfect little shits can be pess than perfect at times.

Camden, as in Camden South Carolina. Florida is one of the lowest about $10k a year. NY $20k. Subtract room and board and its really inexpensive compared to the public brain washing system. Another benefit is this year's graduating class of 80+ received $1.2 billion in scholarship money. Way more per student than any public school I know. 98% average college acceptance rate too.

As for his actions, they were way beyond what I ever did and what his peers were doing. In fact everyone I have talked to said good for you. His actions for a kid in college, even a h.s. senior would be understandable though not welcome. Not for an 8th grader. Sorry living with your dad was a prison. That wasn't the case here. And if he shapes up this year we will consider bringing him back. Our rules were bed by 11, eat 3 real non junk food meals a day, if you leave the neighborhood tell us, no drugs, do your homework, maybe a chore for an hour on the weekend, in by dark, we monitor his social media. We have the final word and you respect us and our authority. Not draconian I would think.

Exactly. Needs to get reprogrammed before it gets out of hand. He's there a minimum of one year. We will see how it goes next summer. I'd like him there all four as he would probably get a better education, into a better school, and more scholarship money. We will see.

Since there are parents around here with younger kids. What do you think you could have done or not done to avoid some or all of this? I like your level headedness.

I did all i could. Only thing is recommend is if your kid is on meds, have a talk with the school nurse, not just teachers, and tell your kid how serious they are. We didn't want him to feel different from other kiss so we said it was his medicine. We didn't tell him it was a controlled substance so he didnt think they were any different than an aspirin.

I work with a few local school districts handling their technology plans.

I think one big thing that stands out is that parents try to be friends with their kids. They want their kids to like them, and to accept them.

I wasn't friends with my parents, they were my superiors and to be treated with respect. I wasn't too fond of it growing up, but now we have a great relationship and I'm glad they were strict with me. I see a lot of my friends who had the "cool, modern parents" growing up and many of them are in jail, have minimum wage jobs, kids with a bunch of different partners, etc. This isn't to say that my parents were dictators or anything, they actually entertained quite a bit and we had a lot of fun growing up, but if they told me something was to be done a certain way, I did it.

I was the typical class clown in school, but I knew that I didn't want my parents coming to the school if there was a problem, and they never really had to. I might have gotten in trouble a few times and each time my parents sided with the teacher. These days kids can do no wrong, and I've seen teachers even get sued by parents for saying the kid did something wrong, it's insane.
