Hurricane Irma

A state of emergency has already been declared in Florida. The vast majority of models have it continuing as a Cat4 hurricane, getting to the tip of Florida and turning north directly into Miami. If you live anywhere along the eastern coast of Florida you need to be preparing to evacuate at least 50 miles inland, and if you haven't already gotten plywood etc to prepare your home, get it tomorrow if it's not already too late. This thing could be an absolute monster.

I'm inland in Orlando area. They usually die a bit by the time they reach here. My house is built to coastal wind standards, withstand cat 5 with no damage. Have 2 propane tanks for the bbq, canned food, gas stove, and I'm not in a flood area. That said it can still be a heck of a ride. Gotta clean garages and get the cars inside.

Going to get additional supplies tomorrow.

Everyone in Brevard county KNOWS we dodged the bullet last year with Hurricane Matthew. My wife, I and kids bugged out last year.

Went straight to Tampa.

Only positive is that Irma will be a fast mover....vs. Harvey. Prolly more wind damage vs rain/flood damage.

Buddies of mine that stayed during Matthew said they hardly got any rain....just winds of up 105mph. I had drained my pool to a "safe" level and came back and the pool was right about where I had left the level.

50 miles is a bit extreme but yes, those near the coast will need to evacuate if it comes here. Everyone near the ocean should know the drill. Ultimately, it will be at least a couple more days before we have a better sense of where Irma is heading. It could be anywhere from gulf coast, SW FL through the state, east coast, or miss altogether.

We are 95% prepared already. Nice to have impact glass this time so I don't need to think about putting up shutters. We'll need to put the patio furniture and grills inside and pick up some gas for the generator mid-late week, if necessary. But otherwise, we stay stocked up on water, batteries, non-perishables, etc. all summer every year.

Double check your bourbon supply, just to be safe. Gotta take care of the important stuff.

Mom and sister and BIL are in Orlando. Avalon Park area. They've never had much of an issue with hurricanes and they've been there forever. Their house took a direct lightning hit earlier this year, though. That caused some damage. Nephew and his wife just moved into their house in Melbourne. Just in time for Irma.

For the last couple of days the right turn North in all the models happens further West than the preceding day. Still really difficult to predict where this one is going but a turn into the Atlantic soon enough to miss everyone appears less likely than it did a couple of days ago.

I live in Downtown Miami and man is this thing fucking my plans up...

I have a flight to London out of MIA Thursday Evening and if it gets cancelled it screws my entire vacation up. Conversely, I am not prepared to stay for the Hurricane. Not really sure how this will turn out, but it looks bad.... I wish everyone the best.

I would think you're good to go with a flight on Thursday. If it were Saturday night not so sure. They still can't forecast if it will hit so gotta prepare or prepare to leave. Isn't downtown evacuation area?

I may have up to 9 people + 4 dogs in my house rather than the normal 2+2 if Irma comes through. Air mattresses via Amazon Prime just in case.

Tough call! Storm isn't forecast to be in the Miami area until Sat afternoon/Sunday morning so that really shouldn't affect your flight. Now the question is whether to go! I would do everything you can to batten the hatches and then get on that plane Thursday evening...

Yes, it is an evacuation area... luckily I live on the 35th floor in a new highrise, I will be fine as long as I can get on that plane.

That's the plan... I HOPE they don't cancel this flight.

With the storm two days out, you should be ok unless the airline pulls some BS. It won't get cancelled due to weather unless there is a significant change in the forecast. I have evacuated N.O. twice by air and we flew out less than 24 hrs before landfall...

I'm a firefighter so unfortunately I have to work during the entire storm leaving my 6 months pregnant wife at home! Luckily she's staying up in Orlando in a condo so she should be safe there...
