Auto Speed 1 of 5 -> Manual Speed 1 of x -> Auto Speed 1 of 5 -> Manual Speed 1 of x -> and so on. I never got to the Low, Medium, High setting as MysticBlue saying. I don't get it. Do BMW have different version of the AC controller for the F15?

That's what I've been doing and I have been doing that if I need a stronger air. But after reading MysticBlue's comment, I got myself confused now. Because what he explained seems to work on his F15, but so far not on mine and Zipforia's.

I'm sorry this is so confusing. I was just trying to pass on the functionality of all the hvac systems, assuming it was like the 4 previous cars I had. I don't have my F15 yet, and it turns out the specifics of which button to push to get this functionality is a little different. However, the concept behind the functionality is the same. Bottom line, it's called "Intensity of the AUTO program". It is controlled by a button that has a small fan and a large fan. Apparently this is the same button you use to adjust fan speed if the system is in manual mode. If it is in auto mode, it adjusts how aggressively the system seeks the set temperature. How did I figure this out? Page 166. And also page 170. Sorry for the confusion.

I guess now there is no problem with my 6 months old car. FYI though, it is the same control on my 2012 F10 528i which I have since 2012.

Well,
Finally i have good news about AC problems.. Problem was in software,so BMW wrote a new program and sent it throught PUMA..so you dont need to change anything, just to connect and install a new software for AC! And works just perfect! |

I have had problems with AC almost for 3 months..in BMW service they have changed cooling liquid,compressor,valves..nothing helped!
I was going mad..then i got a call from BMW that they made a mistake in software thet need to be changed. I waited almost 10 days and then in BMW service they connected my car online with service in Salzburg Austria and delete previous software for AC and installed new. So you need to go to your BMW service and ask them to connect to PUMA..and search for new software for AC for f15..there will find everything they need. |

Hmmm I wonder what 2014 build months the "puma" relates to? Ours was built in March and we live in a climate where it is 90-105 pretty consistently May-August and have not had one time we thought the AC was under performing.

I just got my car back from service for another unrelated issue where they had to reprogram my X5. I think that this may actually have applied the new AC fix because I noticed that the AC does a better job of cooling things down!

Okay, that makes sense as I changed the vent distribution manually on the a/c this weekend. In auto mode it was blowing vents, dash and footwell and it should just blow dash. Once I did that, it worked much better. Figured software and good to know there's a new build.
Have to take it in for a new problem -- rear door opening by itself while driving. See new post. |

Wait wait wait, stop the presses.
Is there any validity to this puma software update? I brought my car in a month or so ago with multiple issues to my service department and one of my issues was that the AC seemed very weak and took forever to get cold. I was told by the service department that the AC was working correctly as designed. This would be a major major deal to me (as I live in the summer humidity heat box also known as the state of Florida) if there is a software update to help with this. I'm bringing in my car to be serviced tomorrow (for the 3rd visit on the same freaking rattle) and would like to know if I should mention the software thing. Thanks for any insights from those out there in the know... |

No update available
Ok, just had car serviced and asked them to check puma for update. I was told that there were no updates available.
Lazy service department, or is it that my car was manufactured with corrected software? Picked up my car early April 2014. |

Our X5 has the 4-zone climate control. Issue for us is not with temperature but with volume as others have mentioned.
If the rear climate is off the AC works great in the front. If the AC is being utilized in the back via sync or individual control even at low fan speeds it completely starves the front vents of volume. I could have the front fan on max and rear on low and still barely get a trickle from the front vents. Only way to return flow back to the front is to turn off the rear. Of course, dealership says there is nothing wrong. |

I entirely agree.
I've had a couple of issues with my AC especially when i put it on cruise control. No AC cooling whatsoever. |

I study automotive engineering. I'm a physicist that has studied every make and model cars worldwide for 40 years (hobby). I have a BMW 335, 2008. It has a great air conditioner! They don't make them like this anymore, but MAX definitely helps (in addition it as head pointing vents in the upper dash that cools wonderfully and cools the dash which prevents IR from reflecting back in your face from a hot dash). I am looking at a 2015 X5. Unfortunately, the AC there is much weaker. Not terrible if you use MAX to get to initial coolness (could take up to 30 minutes, but usually 15, still too damn long). Car AC's to be effective requires the manufacturer to devote serious resources to designing it from the start into the vehicle and cover all needs from desert to 120 F in humid climates. I live in Austin, Texas, which is somewhere in-between. The fact is, an air conditioner at idle waiting in traffic is a poor cooler. With our congestion, that's where I spend most of my time. Compressor rpm's are low and airflow over the condenser is low. A bad combination. The only way to make an air conditioner adapted to that extreme environment is to design it from scratch to handle that. That requires properly sizing compressor output (needs to be able to control is rpm's independently of the engine, i.e. a compressor transmission). And the condenser and evaporators have to be design optimally for all conditions, idle/stop to full highway speed to cool even in 120 F humid environments. The only car I know ever specifically design to do that from scratch is the VW Phaeton (not available in the US). It was specifically designed to keep the car at 72 degrees even in 122 F humid environments (tested in Dubai, which is humid because of sea proximity). This was done only because the VW CEO Ferdinand Pieche personally required it. I'm sure it was remarkably expensive to make! So outside of that, all you can do is tint ALL windows. Including windshield and the moonroof. Solar radiation puts about 1000 watts of heat (equivalent to a 1000 watt space heater) in the car for each square yard of window (depending on the sun's position relative to the window). But maximum IR rejection is the most import criteria, not darkness (you can choose that as suits you, except the windshield must be clear). This will probably make the X5 OK. Still deciding whether to risk that. I HATE being hot when driving! Oh, the vents, yes there is a design defect in the wooden trim piece that covers over the front vents. The upper most vent louver in the upper most position directs airflow directly into a lip extending out from the front wooden trim piece. This causes air to be directed horizontally from the trim piece thus colliding with any upward pointing air from the vents. Technically, it could be fixed by increasing the angle of the taper on the trim piece over the central vent on a router table. Not sure the trim piece is solid wood, so if not then it wouldn't look right unless stained/painted to match. Kind of a pain. No, BMW will not declare this to be a defect. Anyway, hope this helps someone. Again, I HATE being hot when driving!

FWIW, on our New 35d for the drive home the outside temps were in the mid 80's air worked flawlessly fan set one notch above low and rear air on. Vents set to middle and auto on. Playing with it if say you have your temp set at 70 the air flow is low if you lower the temp you get more volume without increasing fan speed. No issues so far with the air IMO.
