Water pump and spark plugs replacement

Guys, got the overheated problem, pulled over right away - OBD code - U019F, dealership quoted:
- Water Pump replace - $1553.36
- Spark Plugs replace - $1049.70
- Replace torn oxidized group strap at left rear of muffler - $129.48

Seems like a bit to much? Should I find some shop? Any recommendations in north Illinois area? Thanks in advance.

I can only chime in on the spark plugs. I think I paid around $450 for OEM plugs + install at my indy shop. They only charge $85/hour and I'm sure BMW is north of $120/hr now.

Shoot, I figured that $1k is too much, but that's what I've got in the quote... May ask SA again about what they mean by $1k to replace plugs... ;-)

Also, water pump - on FCP Euro I see OEM set (pump, thermostat + coolant) is $700, so they charge what 250 per hour?

Why spark plugs replacement is needed for overheating? You can save 1k there. For water pump, it's time consuming to do, but not difficult if dIY.

Don’t know about spark plugs - I think they mentioned misfires or something like that - I’ll ask again.

Water pump - I need a lift right? That coolant flush is difficult without a lift imho based on the videos… I don’t mind doing myself just not sure how to flush it on a driveway

No. No difference. I've ordered spark plug kits for both my 428 and my x5 from FCP, and they were both the same as OEM. Whether they're Bosch or NGK, you'll be fine.

I don't know how handy you are, but you can get the plug kit from FCP for maybe $160 and do it yourself in about an hour.

Regarding a water pump, yes you will need either jackstands or a lift as it can only be removed from underneath the car

Thanks got it, we’ll I guess I might do at an Indy shop rather… thanks anyway. Seems not difficult just a pain to snug under a car and flush all that and then bleed correctly…

Click the following link and enter your zip code to check if any BMW dealerships near you offer “VALUE Pricing”…the services offered and prices for the value services can vary from dealership to dealership…so check all of them that are in driving distance that you’d be comfortable with to see if you can take advantage of any savings: https://bmwusaservice.com/valueservi...SAAEgKBHfD_BwE

Sorry, one more question - I think SA mentioned potential misfire, should I just preventively replace all coils like this one? https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...-12138616153-1

What's the mileage on your car?. I keep thinking to preemptively change my water pump but not sure when would be a good time to do it.

How many miles on the car?

I just did both coils and plugs at 60,000. Probably didn't need to, but we bought the car used and I wanted to start as fresh as possible.

I’ve 33k on it, and not sure why they quote to replace all if it’s some that misfires.

So I need both spark plugs and coils correct?

33k? Stick with the plugs first. But honestly you should get a second opinion or at least buy your own code reader. That way you can verify yourself if you need plugs, as 33k is way to early.

Wow, that's low miles for a water pump to fail.

Personally, I wouldn't change just one coil and I wouldn't change plugs only and not do coils. I do my own work and would rather do both plugs and coils while everything is apart and I'm already dirty and sweaty. It would feel like double the work doing plugs only then coils later.

Yes, but let me say first that this F15 was a troublesome from the beginning - at 20k I got engine replacement under warranty, and now thinking to try to prevent any chances to further damage with failed pump replace plugs and coils at once. But I’m not sure when engine was replaced they did also plugs - I’ve asked SA about pump and he said it’s original. So I doubt that coils will last.

So I need basically torque wrench and custom socket right for plugs?

For the n55 it's easier to take the fan out and you can get it out from the top

Thanks for your feedback about spark plugs and coils… which torque wrench do you use for spark plugs?

You need a thin wall 14mm socket so any 3/8 size torque wrench will work

This is the socket I use

ARES 11000 - 14mm Thin Wall Magnetic Swivel Spark Plug Socket - 3/8-Inch Drive 12-Point Spark Plug Socket - Walls 2mm Thinner Than Standard Spark Plug Sockets https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07RR84R...UTF8&psc=1

I've never used a torque wrench when installing plugs, just do it by feel. I just don't trust torque wrenches (well, not the torque wrenches in my budget) when bolting steel into aluminum.
