EGR fastener

OK, I am breaking down and asking for help.

I replaced my EGR valve. The fastener that secures the coolant line that passes by the valve is supposed to be M6-1.
Is there anything special about the BMW (European) M6 screws? Could it be tapered or something?

I don't think there is anything special about it, what seems to be the problem?

The M6-1 fasteners I bought from Lowes won't thread in. It stops after half a turn at most. I think tried another screw from some nameless 1000-piece set- same issue.
