I bought it new but I have no template or dimensions.

A lot of members here actually remove them for a cleaner look...I know that is one of the first things I am doing when I get my X5 next month.

I would consider leaving it off, someone has already done the work for you. Hopefully they didn't scratch the door while doing it though.

Like others, I removed mine... why would anyone want it?
Just because the manufacture put them there?

If BMW stuck a X5 emblem on the hood, I'm pretty sure 90% of the population would keep it there because it was like this from the factory... Just like people who keep dealer stickers or badges on their cars. I'm not sure why people are afraid to take them off to give the car a cleaner look.

With all that said.. if you really need to install the emblems, I would suggest heading to your local BMW dealer with a ruler to measure the distance from the bottom of the door and the door hinge.

Agreed! Who cares what engine you have diesel or gas, 3,5L or 5,0L.
It will have clean and neat look without badges!

if you're going to head over to the dealer then go to PD or Service and ask for a printout of the badge template or spacing guidelines...

it should be in ETKA.

It's a disease I like to call "badginitis".
There's an Accord here at work that has the "H" emblem in the grille replaced with... (I kid you not!!!) the Pony emblem from a Mustang!!! They also have two stick-on deer whistle thingys on the bumper as well.
I'd take a pic and post it, but I'm not That Guy.
