Safelite did ours in our driveway. They installed a new rain sensor. Have not had any camera related issues - all systems are working fine. The bill was ~$2,100, but state farm covered the whole amount.

Us too. They don't salt the roads here, they put down sand and gravel. You can imagine what a winter's worth of gravel does to windshields. My 328 is in desperate need of a new windshield but I'm not going to pay the deductible to get a new one when I know it'll be cracked in less than a year. The wife's old Xterra is on its 3rd windshield. $600 for the windshield coverage when we leased the X5 made a lot of sense to me.

Just got done setting up another windshield replacement. Shop that the dealer uses for glass (in-house) confirmed that with HUD and Lane Departure there is only OEM glass available. And that State Farm covers OEM glass 100% in this case.
OP - you should raise hell and get your additional money from State Farm! |

Notice that I posted up thread a charge of $2.7K in Oklahoma City, a place said to be known for lower prices than most of the USA.

Seriously, what's wrong with the windshields of this car? I drove all kinds of cars for 10 years without replacing a single windshield. Two weeks after picking up my 2016 X5 in the winter, it was full of cracks and holes as every stone made a damage to it. I just got it replaced and the very first tiny, tiny rock that struck it made another hole in the middle of it. And oh, the fog light cracked aswell after a few Days.
Am I being the unluckiest guy or are you guys having the same issue? Windshields cracking, fog lights cracking, coolant radiator full of holes, runflat tires impossible to get any balance in...I never had to struggle with a new car this much. |

I made some research on the subject today and it appears that newer windshields actually are are thinner and easily cracks. The official reason for this is to "save weight". My workshop on the other hand told me that sanding of the roads is "different" these days, causing all this trouble. I assume it became very different the very same day I picked up my F15, january the 16th 2016.
I paid my third visit today at the work shop for glass damage on this car, since that january day. I had zero visits the last 10 years aside from that. If I keep this pace, my glass repairs are going to cost me more than the car. It seriously pisses me off that newer cars are getting worse, no room for spare tire, all glass breaking, car undriveable without RFT (wobbling) and undrivable with them. Cant drive the car an inch with the door open, no oil stick to visually see the status of the oil and so on. But well - totally worth it from all that weight those thin windshields are saving. Remember when we had these heavy windshields and we struggled with that weight? Oh jeez Im so happy them days are over. |

On a related note, does anyone know if there is still a shortage of replacement windshields? Last time I was at the dealership, SA said there was a major shortage of F15 windshields. |

I'm finding this unacceptable. I compared with my 2012 Kia Optima that had a better looking, uncracked windshield after 80 000 miles than both my BMW windshields after two weeks in traffic. And then there's the foglight too. Im keeping this in mind next time Im buying a car. |

My X5 got a chip in the windshield on day 6 last July. Got it filled with no further issues. My wife's X5 got hit pretty hard and needed immediate replacement. My x5 is getting a new windshield Thursday. Has 4 or 5 chips that turned into major cracks. This windshield seems like it is more prone to major damage. doesn't take much at all to cause a chip that needs filled. then it is a race to see if that can get done before a crack develops.
I did have to replace one windshield on my previous E70, and also one on our previous F25. |

Alot of dealers sub out glass work to the local shops including safelite and charge the bmw markup and pass it on to us. My dealer does this. Bmw techs do nothing. They will use oem glass if requested and depending on your ins company, may or may not make you pay the price difference.

I requested something else than OEM but got it anyway, still cracked straight away. I realized I havent driven this car for a full two weeks with an unbroken windshield yet. Just sad.

Is the OEM glass really the best option? On my previous cars I always went with aftermarket (Pilkington) and I liked it better than the original. Less scratching, more even tint, etc. It is true that I did not have a HUD or a rain sensor before.

My car is X5 F15 M50d 2014 - HUD, camera, rain sensor (full pack).
I had a chipped and "repaired" windshield, that cracked like a bullhorn after the first hot day. Dealer quote: best price 1750 USD Pilkington dealer quote: 960 USD Pilkington dealer told me that the HUD + 2 orifices (camera and rain sensor) versions are made only for BMW, no OEM -> double the price vs. HUD + camera or HUD + rain sensor ONLY! This is stupid and frustrating! Also, I hate the fact that with HUD option, the climatic Windshield option is missing => very bad with a black X5 in the summer... Looking on the cars on the street (X5 F15), I saw windshields made by: - Guardian (mine) - Carlex Last edited by Mentat; 05-02-2018 at 03:16 PM.. |

Update:
The Windshield is Carlex. (43R-000578) Carlex bought Guardian, so in fact is the same product as the original part. No need for calibration, as they did not disconnect the camera. Now the strange part: - there is a new tint on the windshield and now is not so hot in the sun (this is great). - it's like now I have HUD + Climatic Comfort Option! - the new windshield is more reflective and the central speaker is reflecting. This is really disturbing. - I use polarised sunglasses and usually, I must move a little my head in order to see the HUD. Now It's almost impossible to see the HUD. I must move my head much more to see a glimpse of the HUD. |

Afaik, you cannot see the HUD with polarized sunglasses.
About the climate comfort and HUD, there is an OEM windshield that has both, but is not compatible with other things like active cruise control. |

And I can see the hud with polarized glasses but I do have to move my head to the right slightly. I got my windshield tinted with ceramic and it helped a bit with that too.
