"Heal toe" technique for smoother starts

Since my X5m spends the vast majority of its driving time in stop and go / city traffic, I've started to leave the Start/Stop on. One of my least favorite features with the car is the temporary auto brake hold once you reach a full stop. With no "creep" forward feature in D like a properly tuned automatic the car lurches forward after every start from 0mph. Pair this with the start/stop and your lux SUV feels about as smooth off the line as a 15 year old kid learning to drive stick.

Recently, I've been playing around with a "heal toe" technique to smooth this out. When stopped with the engine off (start/stop) and preparing to accelerate, I roll my foot and give the throttle a little tap. This fires the engine back up but also disengages the brake hold, now when you move your foot from the brake to gas peddle to start accelerating the car doesn't have to "push" through the brake hold and overall it's a much smoother experience.

Has anyone else tried anything to make the car drive more smoothly in traffic? Give this a shot and let me know what you think.

P.S. I leave all my settings in full comfort. Similarly I've experimented with putting the throttle setting in 2 or 3 and manually starting the car in 2nd gear. This let's you ride the torque wave to the speed limit and is pretty fun.

I would disable the Auto hold and engage the DHC with a 10 mph limit

I don't think any of this will help your toe heal any faster but good luck.

I own no garage queens. If it's in my driveway, it's been ridden hard and put away wet. ...and now, with a light crust of Maine road salt.

It took me a few months but now i can get the X5M to start off smoothly 90% of the time. No auto start stop or auto brake hold. Just have to be really gentle with the gas pedal initially to get it to "engage".

Occasionally it would be jerky if I get on the gas too hard and let off right away.

I drive in Engine Sport+, Transmission in 2 and the rest (Steering/Suspension) in comfort. That's my daily setup.

Alan

I've driven the Cayenne GTS, if you're looking for a smoother drive, it is more refined to go P car.

That's a whole bunch of money to spend on a dubious endeavor to heal a toe though. I would just get in to see a trusted orthopedic surgeon and take some vitamin D3. Get the toe properly healed and then look at a different vehicle.

Went to see a grammarian about my toe. She said it's ugly but fully functional.

Touché. I think all of us are just kidding with you. This hasn't been an issue with initial movement for me regarding an abrupt start. But I tend to have a heavy (but healthy) foot.
