We have a Tempurpedic Cloud Lux which is a firm mattress with a soft "pillow top". I dig it but it definitely runs hot. If you don't have central air, I would probably find a conventional mattress instead of foam.

I got a yogabed (fiancé was sold on the name) from online and it's fantastic. King size was $1k I believe maybe less. Free delivery, 100 night trial with full refund if you don't like it.

Thanks all for the suggestions....keep them coming.

Since you mentioned free trial periods, what is typical regarding returns if you dont like it? I know laying on it for 60 seconds in a store is quite different than sleeping on one.

a lot of the online purchase give you 90 nights or something. If you don't like it, they send somebody to pick it up, and they dispose of it in a landfill or something (because can't re-use beds, ALLEGEDLY)

I've loved my plain-Jane Temperpedic, but after 15+ years it's now got little indentations where we sleep, and it's time to get a new one. Not sure getting another Temper because wife wants a pillow top.

I am also in the market for a new mattress, but I am finding the whole process infuriating. I think I have settled on getting a traditional mattress. I like the S & F I've laid on. Ever place i've been has a "trial" period, but you have to pay a restocking fee ($100-$149).

Worse than buying a car.

I just got a Ashley perfect 10 mattress from Ashley furniture. 3 months in and I love it. Alot more comfortable than my parents temperpedic mattress that cost 2x the amount. Also ended up getting a cool gel sheet that keeps you cool at night as I'm a bigger guy (6,2 250) and it was very worth it

There are several things I will NOT skimp on. My "comfortable Sleep" is definitely one of them. We replace our mattresses every 7-8yrs. 3 times in the 16yrs we've been in our house.
I have looked and layed on damn near every mattress worth considering. What I find that works best for me and my wife, are 'combination memory foam and spring'. A straight Memory Foam bed like a Tempur-pedic is just NOT supportive enough for me. And Sleep Number has many reported issues that make sense when you consider the very nature of those beds materials and design (air membranes that inflate and deflate regularly). Here is a quote directly from one of if not the best Bed Reviewers on the web, Sleep Like The Dead about Sleep Number:

THE BAD. Difficulty of (initial) use • high maintenance • troublesome middle area possible • breakdowns / malfunctions • price / value • warranty • some noise • C- company rating.
So back to my personal choice. Again, I love memory foam! Just not for the entire bed all the way through! I have owned a Sterns and Foster, and of course 2 from the 3 biggest brands: Sealy, Simmons and Serta

The one we bought last is the Serta iComfort Super Pillow Top. From a pricing standpoint, it has been my experience that no one beats out Sears for mattress purchases! Here is ours: http://www.sears.com/serta-icomfort-...3&blockType=G3

My best suggestion is to find a mattress store with a knowledgeable (or at least semi-knowledgeable) sales person to help you sort through all the choices and identify your preferences. We bought a new mattress last year and they have changed a lot since we bought the last one.

+1 for combination memory foam/spring

Love my firm Saatva.

I've gone through my fair share of Casper/Tuft & Needle mattresses, wasn't for me.

We just played this game- Ordered a Tuft & Needle mid-October 2016, and by Thanksgiving we had ordered a Casper and returned the T&N.

Dealing with both companies was amazingly easy, both to purchase and return. The return was picked up by a local place who recycled it and the money was promptly returned to the credit card, no questions no hassle and they handled everything regarding the pickup scheduling etc. If you have reservations about customer service don't- Both Casper and T&N were/are fantastic to deal with.

We now own two Caspers, one each king & queen in the kids room, and both are holding up great so far. Honestly, at under a grand each, we could replace them at five year intervals and it would be easy and still cost less than many other fancy mattresses out there.

^^ We just did pretty much the same thing. Started out with a Tuft & Needle, but the wife didn't like how firm it was. We just switched to a Casper this week. So far we like it as it's a little softer than the T&N, but it does sleep a little warmer.

My girlfriend has a Casper, would definitely recommend, also invest in nice sheets

If you listen to podcasts, you'll likely have heard them advertised, and always accompanied with a coupon code.

Build your own! Seriously, thats what I did. One google search of the dangerous chemicals used in retail matresses was enough to convince me. I used all natural laytex memory foam, and all natural bamboo mattress casing. It was pricey, came in at probably $1200 for a 13" thick full size, but whenever I move on to a king or queen I will do the same thing. Best part is, it has 3 layers of foam, 1 6" and 2 3" layers. the 3" layers are on top and when the mattress starts to wear, you can just replace the top layers of foam and you have a new mattress! Not to mention it is SOOOO comfortable.

Saatva is really legit. Don't listen to a lot of the big box guys.

These mattresses are made in USA and some of them best out there.

I have this one in Cal King...cured my back problems in just a few nights.

Also, unlike many of the "ship direct to your home" online mattresses, you can actually check out a Casper in person at a West Elm store if there's one near you.
