Right on! I don't know of a lot of huge differences between the years the cars were produced (2006-2008). I know the 2006 models don't have TPMS sensors, but other than that I think all the model years are the same (perhaps an aux input on 07-08 cars as well?).

The cars are extremely reliable even in their advanced age, as there just isn't a lot to go wrong. Like every S54, you should keep an eye on rod bearings and the VANOS bolts, and the motor does require a valve adjustment every 30k miles or so depending on how it's been driven. However as far as electronics etc., the car is just a tank. It suffers none of the problems the Z3Ms had with the rear subframe etc.

Depending on whether you want a Coupe or a Roadster, the differences in price can be significant. Expect to pay anywhere from $6-8k more for a Coupe. For me however, the choice in getting a Roadster was a no brainer. I love open top motoring, and the Z4M Roadster suffers none of the rigidity issues as most convertibles (it's more stiff than the Z3M Coupe!!). You could probably find a very nice Z4M Roadster with around 40-50k miles for $20k (maybe less!). They are just fantastic cars, and I couldn't recommend enough getting one of your own!

To me, it's the greatest BMW ever made and for the life of me I cannot understand why so many people have slept on the car. Even now, 10 year old examples are the best bang for the buck out there.
Ditto

Even after owning one all this years, I still can't resist of taking a peak at it everytime I park it.

it's been a long time since owning my z4mr and I still consider it my favorite, even compared to my f80, m6 or z3m coupe!

I'm in love with my Z4M Roadster! After an opportunity for a full day on track with latest R8 V10+ I was quite sad, thinking I would never be able to buy a car that can truly blow me away. I was wrong and realised it just a month later when I saw the ad for this car. It's not as good a performer on specs as the R8 of course, but driving it feels as good if not better than driving the R8. And I definitely love the S54's sound more than the Audi's V10 however that may sound to someone.

I hope I never have to sell it.

P.S. Installing an ESS VT-525 kit haunts me in my dreams some nights....even though I've never felt lack of performance.

A month ago I parked my red M235i next to a beautiful blue Z4M coupe. It looked awesome with wide tires sticking out of the flared fenders and a proper four tip M exhaust. I know my car is super comfy and with the DINAN it puts down 330 hp and 380 ft lbs at the wheels, but I'd love to swap cars for a track day!

I happened by Beverly Hills BMW one night and saw one in the showroom right when they first came out. It was a red coupe. I would have bought it on the spot if I had had the money but I didn't. I could not stop staring at it.

After the launch of Z5, too large IMO, BMW should launch a proper /light RWD Z3 to continue such a great tradition!

I see you have a lift at home. Which one is it and would you get the same one if you had to do it all over again?

I had an 08 Z4 3.0i with the auto and Sport. That was probably the most fun car I have owned up until I got the 228 6MT I have now. I'm always looking at the Z4M's that are for sale. I need a vert again one day.

Great review of the two. I have racked up almost 49k miles in 2 years on the 228 and it's not going anywhere.

It's actually a friend of mine - Quickjack system ($1000). It works really well in a low ceiling garage and is portable to take to the track or a friends house. I do use hockey pucks to bridge the gap between the lift flats and jack points of the car.

They make a great pair, fortunately my wife has grown to fully appreciate the 228i is not bugging me to shop new cars for her anymore.

Great article. While I loved my z4mc 4 years ago (and my z3mc before that) I am going to be moving on soon.

I havent listed it yet but it will be for sale soon.

Having trouble finding it on autotrader - I put the years 2006-2008 but I don't see an option for Z4M only Z4 3.0 etc - any suggestion on what exactly I'm looking for?

I may be in the minority here but I love odd ball reviews like this. I understand that this will most likely never get cross shopped, but I enjoy thinking in terms of "what could I get for x budget range." Most of these types of comparisons turn into flame wars of why they shouldn't be compared. Great review OP, enjoyed reading.
