2017 X6 Tailgate Opening On Its Own

So, the other day the tailgate decides to open up two times on its own while I was idling along... Has this happened to anyone else? The second time it happened, I was backing up and hung the rear end over a sidewalk... The tailgate immediately opened up.

It's easy for the key buttons to be depressed in your pocket. Mine happens on occasion too.

Both times the vehicle was in gear. Probably 1-2MPH... basically idling. I couldn't believe it. Happened twice within minutes of each other. Just made no sense when the car was in gear for it to just pop like that. I was afraid it was gonna hit the top of my garage door and cause damage. I was able to stop it both times.

Here is the answer to your question.

I had the same thing happened to me number of times. I had to go to BMW dealer to fix it. They will reprogram your remote, so you would need to push the open trunk twice. Please see the attachment TBS for fixing. Print it out and show it to your SA.Tb BMW (1).pdf

Were you driving with speed of 1 or 2 mph, or were you idling? How did you catch it?

Guys, it read there in the bulletin:
"CAUSE
• Vehicle key trunk/tailgate button may accidentally be pressed, thus opening the tailgate"

Solution is to re-program the key to press the "trunk" button TWICE.

Thanks for the inclusion of the TBS, I've had mine open occasionally especially in my garage. I try to open up my garage door now before putting my X5M's key in my pocket so that the tail gate does not open up with the garage door close .... the clearance is really tight and it might hit into it.

I have a tight clearance in my garage so I'm worried about the same thing. As soon as I read this thread, I could picture my wife not realizing that tailgate accidentally opened and hitting the garage door opening. I don't even have the X5 yet (on order) but I wonder if the factory fixing this issue now? Can anyone confirm? If not, I can have the dealer reprogram it before delivery.

On my 2017 F16 you have to hold the trunk button on the key down for a few seconds to open it, don't know if that's an improvement on before or not but it certainly isn't a "press" and open.

Like I said earlier though, I have a case for it so likelihood of accidently pressing in any situation is nil.

In addition to reprogramming the key fob ( pressing twice to open ), you could also set the opening height of the trunk lid so as not to hit the garage door when fully opened. Just in case

What is the coding to enable double press of the remote key button to open the tailgate? I know the ECU, but I don't know the exact changes for double press.

Happened to me on three occasions. Once when I was driving in traffic, twice when the vehicle was parked inside. Took it in, no faults found. Unable to prevent the key from opening the rear hatch.

The key may have been in my pocket, really do not remember but i'm watching it now

The problem is I park my car in downtown Baltimore and do not to come back after 8 hours to find the tailgate open, that would be bad
