Help on Winter Tires/Rims & Replacing Kidney Grill

Hi All,

I am a new owner of a used Alpine White 2018 x5M (impatiently waiting for it to be shipped to me). The car comes with the stock 21in rims with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, but I live in NY and winter is creeping up fast. I want to get a set of winter rim & tires and debating on getting 20in rims. Does anyone know what is the BMW factory winter tires? I am trying to stick with the factory tires because the BMW Tire & Rim warranty only covers the standard BMW tires (attached clip from the warranty). Any change anyone in NY area looking to sell their 20in rims?

I am also looking to purchase OEM Black Kidney Grill Frame and side fend fins to black, can someone recommend a site where I can purchase the OEM parts or equivalent?

Thanks in advance

If you want to go 100% per book (which is not necessary IMO) 611M style winter rims were sold for X5M and "recommended" https://www.shopbmwusa.com/product/6...L-AND-TIRE-SET

Congrats on the X5M!

Good call getting a set of 20's for winter, having separate winter/summer setups is the best option IMO. I'd check the specifics of that tire warranty - does it have to be 1 specific tire brand/model, or just an approved OEM spec tire? I would think if you stick with a Pirelli or Michelin type tire there's no reason BMW would deny a tire claim. I run the Michelin Alpine PA4 winter performance tire... would recommend!

I buy all OEM parts from www.getbmwparts.com, they're a vendor here.

If you want to see the BMW options...simply use one of the online part database sites...put in the last 7 digits of your VIN (or click the correct selections accordingly for what you have)...and then go to the WHEEL diagrams.

You will see the BMW recommended winter tire selections and sizes (and the part nbrs) that you can order from your local BMW dealership's parts department...or shop you local & national tire vendors where you may get better pricing and lifetime free balancing and seasonal tire changes.

If you're not familiar with any online part database sites...here's two popular ones:

Appreciate all the links, there is so much information on the forum, its been hard to find specific topics.

If the current set up are staggered rims, would you recommend using a staggered winter tire set up too or would I be able to go with a square winter tire set up? I do want to buy 20” rims for winter use.

Thank you for the link, I will check them out. On the warranty it says it would only be replacing the tire & rim with genuine or approved BMW parts.

Square winter seems a bit more practical.

If I go with the square, im assuming I need to get something called “spacers” since my factory set up is staggered? Is that correct?

I reside in NYC like you had no issues last 4 winters on staggered setup with DWS09 all season tires I wouldn't worry too much as our winters are not that harsh compared to other colder climates.

This all depends on which wheels you go with. If you go with a square set of winter wheels...then you'd also take into consideration the rear wheel's specs in regard to if you would need spacers.

For instance, the 20" BMW 611 wheel style winter wheels listed in the database for the "square" tire set up...has a 32mm offset...if mounted with the 285/40/20 tire...it pushes the rear wheel out to about the same place the staggered rear summer wheel's 38mm offset and 11˝" width sits:
  • 10" x 20" w/40mm offset (front)
  • 10˝" x 20" w/32mm offset (rear)

No you don't nee spacers, staggered set up offers you wider rear rim and uses wider tires for the rear axel, spacers are pretty much for the look of it.
As far as your tire size is correct- you are good.
Check this thread, it will help you better understand what I am talking about:

So the problem is that the x5 I just purchased comes with the 21in Michelin sport tires and I don’t see all season tires for 21in rims available on tire rack.
