The tech in the RR is a deal breaker. Anyone who has used it will tell you it's a dinosaur compared to BMW. Slow response, slow screen transitions, clunky address entry, poor voice controls, lack of street-level traffic, etc. The cameras have a terrible graininess and resolution to them as well. In a $100k car it's just not acceptable.

See for yourself around 2:43 in. It's awful (and I don't want to hear anyone complaining about X6 cargo room when they see how the back seats in the range rover don't even come close to folding flat). Cooley thought the cameras were defective the resolution was so poor, but this is how they are. There are long threads on the RR forums about how poor the cameras are, and the speed of the tech - oy vey.

Still would take the RR over the two. It's the best looking of the three. Plus, I'm not going to drag race and put my family in danger. But still impressive with both Benz and BMW performances.

This is 100% right. I crossed the shopped the X5M and the RRS and was struck by how poor the tech was (see the pic below for their take on 'Surround View'). That and I wanted an SUV that was capable of feeling much smaller than it is (hp was a distant secondary consideration) and the X5M does a much more convincing job.

Regarding the off road chops of the RRS, the likelihood of me taking a car in this price range off road is approximately zero...in fairness, the likelihood of me taking one to the track (quarter mile or otherwise) is also approximately zero. That said, engineering dedicated to improving the truck's on-track performance has tangible day-to-day benefits (unlike the R&D expense and hardware needed to ford 3ft of water).

Losing by 3 car lengths in the 1/4 mile to vehicles significantly lighter and more powerful is pathetic? I guess most of the vehicles on this forum are pathetic compared to the RR Sport SVR then.
So it's the fault of BMW and Mercedes that Rover can't make a vehicle shed weight to gain performance? Rover has been and always will be the worst purchase of the group. They will continue to be plagued with issues and remain the car that only its blind followers will purchase. The owners get used to the new models as they frequently visit their local service centers for issues with their existing models. :

The fact that you reference "the most off-road capable vehicle" is laughable. Right, because the likelihood of anyone considering the off-road capabilities of any of these vehicles is about as accurate as someone who weighs fuel consumption as a consideration when buying them. All vehicles with 20-22" wheels will NEVER see off road usage. Unless their owners run off the road or drive over a median while texting. Not to mention the Rover is the only SUV in the group. It would be a more accurate comparison vs the X5M and the ML, but when is the Internet ever accurate....

Let me rephrase that, if I won one on a game show I'd prefer it be the AMG. Even then, it would get sold for something else.

I had two RRS SC'd and they were mostly trouble free. Maybe I got lucky. With snow tires, you really felt like you could go anywhere, and I pretty much did during winters when people gave up plowing and shoveling. They will never handle or feel the same as an M, a Cayenne or an AMG. But they are solid vehicles. Mine never felt underpowered, but the most recent one I had (14) just felt too vague on the road and it required too many minor steering corrections when taking long curves. If I had not bought a 911 Turbo during the time I owned the RRS, maybe I would have been OK continuing to own it. But the 911 steering made me realize how bad it was in the RRS.

All three of these vehicles have their pluses and minuses. I personally think the styling on the "coupes" is atrocious, but the real trucks look nice. Nobody needs 545 hp, let alone 575, but we buy these trucks because we want them.

Whichever one of these three you are lucky to own, enjoy it.

It's a terrible car. Other than the supreme vantage point there is nothing I liked in it. Terribly vague steering, too soft suspension, weird throttle response, and the absolute worst tech in a car so expensive.

I'd take an X5 over it in a second, even though I don't like its looks.

This.

I desperately wanted to like the RRS as I get a little squimish (for no good reason), buying a BMW at this price point. RRS has cache and if you believe TopGear, a revelatory chassis. It's just not there.

Let's be real when people think of purpose built hauling trucks or SUVs they are thinking Escalade, Yukon Denali, Tahoe, Ford whatever......I just don't understand these vehicles.
Your right! Show us the detailed 2016 vs 2015 January BMW sales figures like we want! Spreadsheets greatly appreciated

Perplexed Minds ?

It's amazing how different attributes of the E71/F86 ///M models throw people off in all directions for likability.

I find the amusement or I should say interest on the peculiarity of this car very intriguing.

It's the epitome of acquired taste.

I always say what you want in a car?

For me I go by the saying "to be forearmed is to be forewarned"

Always ready for what ever, group gathering, wanna get stuff from Home Depot, wanna pick up couple girls/guys, family. The possibilities are endless.

You can cruise in efficient mode and mind your business and watch all stares or be obnoxious and burble all over the place. To have that power is so OFFICIAL and using it wisely is where the grace is.

All in all I feel this is a car for the most sophisticated in terms of the driver knowing exactly what he/she wants and it speaks volume to his/her character.

The perfect niche.

Fair enough. But I've not owned one, nor would I consider owning one for at least 15 years.

But for me a luxury 4x4 can only be an RR and nothing else.

Reliability

Although I have never test driven any of these vehicles. I have worked at Land Rover/ Jaguar and have driven the Autobiographies often, I love the comfortable ride though. From talking to the techs, reliability is horrendous on these Range Rovers. I see them in the shop ALL the time. The main reason (status) that I see why anyone with money would drive these would be because my rich neighbor has one so I want one in the garage as well (these people have more than 2 vehicles). I've seen these Range Rovers broken down before deliveries and 1-2 weeks after deliveries often and so I ask the techs in the shop. These cars are a pit to throw money, we had over 60 loaner cars and most of them are loaned out to Range Rover Sport and Range Rover full size owners. Don't get me wrong, I love how these look and feel, but if you want one expect to buy 2 to have one as a backup because they will break down often and be on a tow bed to the closet LR/J dealership, unless you like Evoques or Discovery Sports as loaners.

For most people that have never owned one, they are only intrigued by the brand and it's status symbol and so they want one just like any exotic sports car. Once you own one, come back and let us know how much money you've sink into them and how often it was in the shop.

Agreed. I can't say it's the most attractive car I've ever seen, but I like it. Compared to the BMW it has a more cohesive design in my eyes.
