And just to be correct MB copied with the GLE Coupe, not the GLC which is an X3 competitor. And yes the current X6 can seat 5 with the bench rear. It definitely defines the class and is a beast.

I had a the F80 M3 then switched to the X5M. The F80 had a very hard time putting power to the ground, even with 295 MPSS. A V8 TT would upset the weight distribution and make traction worst.

The S55 is one of the best engines ever produced by BMW. Closed deck construction, plasma iron deposited cylinder walls, fast spooling turbos, and the DCT is the best I've driven.

It's leap and bounds compared to a regular 335i, making 480HP crank. It does lack in the sound department, which good exhaust like AWE/Fabspeed/Armytryx can fix. In short, I wouldn't cross off the M3/M4 just because it doesn't have a V8. The S55 is brilliant, light yet very powerful..
I don't think anyone doubts the S55. But it sounds like crap and off-the-line traction is miserable. A v8TT plus AWD and M3/4 dynamics would get me back into this platform for sure. For now I like the Porsche formula but it's more costly.

The formula does cost more, but man is it worth it. P cars define "everything not being about just numbers"
